The next time you hear a quiet street at night in New York, don’t assume the city’s underbelly is asleep.
Over the past few weeks, a string of viral videos has people doing a double take: security cameras reportedly captured multiple groups climbing into and out of city manholes after dark, with sightings reported in both Brooklyn and Queens.
One of the most talked-about clips shows roughly seven people emerging from a manhole in Williamsburg during the early morning hours. In the viral footage, some members of the group appear to be wearing headlamps and carrying tools. At one point. a person comes dangerously close to being struck by a passing vehicle while climbing up into the middle of an intersection.
Other footage points to similar behavior elsewhere. In another incident. a similarly sized group was allegedly seen exiting a manhole in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood around 2 a.m. Once above ground, the individuals reportedly headed toward parked vehicles and changed into fresh clothes. Authorities believe the group may have spent roughly three hours underground before resurfacing.
The pattern stretches further back, too. Earlier this spring. surveillance footage from Queens allegedly captured three people wearing waterproof gear opening a manhole cover and descending into the sewer system. Witnesses say the final person carefully closed the cover behind them before disappearing underground.
A video tied to the circulating footage includes text that reads: “Surveillance videos show multiple groups of people entering New York City’s sewer system through maintenance holes in Brooklyn and Queens over the last month. Police say there is no known threat to public safety, but the incidents remain under investigation.”.
City officials say inspections conducted after some of the incidents found no evidence of damage to sewer infrastructure. Investigations remain ongoing, and authorities say there is currently no indication of a threat to public safety.
But the warnings are clear—and they don’t treat this as a harmless curiosity. Officials are emphasizing that entering the sewer system is extremely dangerous. Rob Wolejsza. a spokesperson for the city’s Department of Environmental Protection. said: “Sewers can contain numerous hazards. including noxious and potentially deadly gases. unstable surfaces. flooding risks. and confined spaces. For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall.”.
So what were these groups doing underground?
No one seems to know for sure. and the videos have sparked a wave of theories online—everything from secret treasure hunting to urban exploration. underground adventurers chasing an urban legend. or something far stranger. One Brooklyn resident, though, wasn’t convinced the footage was just mischief.
Anthony Purdie told CNN: “They look like they were looking for something important, like money, or for doing some type of hurting. Ain’t no fun and games. I mean, seven grown adults going down there? Got to be something, man.”
What’s undeniable is the timing and the setting: groups disappearing into manholes in the dark. then reappearing hours later—sometimes with headlamps. tools. waterproof gear. and a tight sense of routine. The city says the systems weren’t damaged. Investigators are still working to understand the motive.
For now, the footage keeps circulating, and the unanswered question lingers under every clip: what secrets—if any—were these people chasing beneath New York’s streets?

So they’re just… climbing into manholes for fun??
Idk why they keep saying there’s “no known threat” when people are popping up in the street at 2am with headlamps and tools. Like what tools? And why in intersections??
Wait I thought this was like TikTok prank stuff? But then they changed clothes after?? That sounds like they’re not just exploring. Also “three hours underground” is insane like how do they even breathe down there lol.
Honestly I’m more worried about the sewer damage part—if inspections “found no damage” that just means nobody checked the right manholes yet. I bet they’re doing something with the tunnels like stealing stuff or whatever. New York underbelly is wild, but the article didn’t say enough, like who even owns those maintenance holes??
