Nick Castellanos will coach in All-American Game at site of ‘Miami Incident’
Former Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos will coach in September’s Prep Baseball All-American Game at loanDepot Park in Miami:
Here’s some info on the event, with Castellanos set to coach the senior class:
“After successful 2024 and 2025 editions, the Prep Baseball All-American Game will return to Miami in 2026. The fourth annual event is headed back to loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, with the country’s top high school juniors and seniors facing off in the premier scouting showcases across amateur baseball. The game itself will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, while the workout will be held a day prior, on Sept. 18.”
Castellanos has taken the summer off after being designated for assignment by the San Diego Padres in early June. Castellanos was hitting .191 with four homers, 20 RBIs and a .560 OPS before his release. He hasn’t joined a team since then, though it’s unclear if the 34-year-old hopes to continue his career in 2027.
Of course, Castellanos’ time in Philadelphia came to an ugly end when the Phillies released him at the outset of Spring Training, choosing to eat the final season of his five-year/$100 million deal. While Castellanos did have some special moments in a Phillies uniform, he ultimately underperformed on the while, posting a .732 OPS in parts of four season in red pinstripes.
Things ultimately ended on a poor note with Castellanos, highlighted by what he dubbed “The Miami Incident,” where he started drinking a beer in the dugout at … loanDepot Park after former manager Rob Thomson lifted him for a defensive replacement last May. Castellanos — who is from nearby Hialeah — took exception to the decision in front of friends and family. Castellanos was benched the next day, snapping a streak of 236 consecutive games played. It was one of multiple public disagreements he had with the coaching staff during his final season in the organization.
Beyond the irony of Castellanos returning to the dugout at loanDepot Park, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the outfielder had told teammates he didn’t trust Thomson and hitting coach Kevin Long “because they had never played in the majors.” The high school seniors participating in this game won’t have that concern.
