By the time Brazil walk out toward Lincoln Financial Field for their second game of the 2026 World Cup, one familiar figure won’t be there—not in the starting lineup, not in the dugout. Neymar Jr. will not be on the bench for the Seleção against Haiti.
The absence lands sharply for a team that is trying to build momentum after a dramatic opener. Brazil were outplayed for stretches but salvaged a 1–1 draw against Morocco in their tournament curtain raiser. with Vinicius Junior producing the key moment of brilliance. Improvement is clearly needed if Brazil want to make a deep run under Carlo Ancelotti. and Haiti is widely viewed as the weakest opponent Brazil is likely to face this summer.
Even with that advantage, the No. 10’s unavailability changes the emotional and practical rhythm of the squad. Neymar is back in training, but he is not yet match-fit.
He is 34 and still recovering from a grade two calf injury that has kept him out for a month. The original diagnosis had suggested he would return in two to three weeks. but the recovery has taken longer than expected. Neymar featured on Brazil’s bench against Morocco, but he won’t be available for this one.
On Thursday, the Brazilian soccer federation released a statement detailing how his rehab is progressing. Brazil said Neymar will “remain in New Jersey to optimize the final phase of his recovery process,” using the facilities at The Ridge Hotel and the Columbia Park Training Center.
That decision also underlines the stakes of timing. Ancelotti has previously said Neymar is pushing hard to speed up his recovery. Still. the schedule is unforgiving: there is also an expectation in the reporting that he may be in serious doubt for Brazil’s final group-stage match against Scotland on June 24.
There is optimism, though, that Neymar can be healthy by the knockout rounds. Brazil are expected to qualify without much trouble—especially if they defeat Haiti—so the hope is that the long-awaited return can come right as their quest for a sixth World Cup title reaches its climax.
While the world waits on Neymar’s debut, the contrasts are hard to ignore. Veteran legends like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić have already featured in North America this summer. For Brazil, the question now isn’t whether they can handle the first part of the tournament. It’s how quickly they can adapt without their spiritual leader and all-time goalscorer as they try to turn early glimpses into something bigger.
