New York Democrats oust incumbents as fears rise

New York City Democratic primaries on Tuesday night upended two House seats held by Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat, with both losing to candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani—setting off alarm among parts of the American left over the party’s stanc

On Tuesday night, New York City Democrats didn’t just change a couple of congressional lineups—they rattled a sensitive nerve across the American left, with many commentators asking whether the party has become a less welcoming place for Jews.

Voters ousted two incumbents in New York Democratic primaries: Reps. Dan Goldman (D-NY) and Adriano Espaillat (D-NY). Espaillat. the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. lost to a Mamdani-backed challenger—Darializa Avila Chevalier—while Goldman was beaten by ex-city comptroller Brad Lander. described as a self-identified “Liberal Zionist.” Both winning candidates were backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D).

Chevalier’s victory immediately drew fire. She helped lead the student encampment at Columbia University in protest of the Israel-Hamas war. and she has also grabbed headlines for statements that opponents say target Israel and strain the relationship between Democratic leaders and pro-Israel voters.

Chevalier has declared that Israel “doesn’t exist,” and argued for the abolition of prisons, the police, and borders. She has also been described in criticism for slamming the U.S. and attacking Democratic Party leaders.

By Wednesday, the rhetoric had escalated sharply. The New York Post ran a blaring headline dubbing the Mamdani-backed winning candidates the “hateful slate.” That framing was echoed by several prominent commentators on the left. turning a primary outcome into a broader argument about whether mainstream Democrats—or at least the coalition around them—still believes in basic pluralism.

Michael Cohen, a MS NOW columnist, put the alarm in stark terms on X: “This is a genuinely scary night for New York City Jews.”

Fred Guttenberg, a left-leaning gun control activist, said the country is moving in two directions—one side blaming George Soros, the other blaming AIPAC—and he warned that, as a Jewish person, he fears he “do[es] not have a political home.”

Other reactions captured the sense that the primaries were forcing Jewish voters into an impossible choice. Evan Barker wrote. “I don’t think Democrats understand that they just made swing voters choose between the DSA and MAGA.” Sara Forman posted that “the DSA is effectively in charge of the NYC Dems” and urged that “we need to stop pretending it is not the case.”.

Jack Weisman went further. saying Democrats are tearing themselves apart “to elect the most dangerous kooks” and adding. “It’s even worse that single issue seems to be who hates Jews the most.” Alex גדעון בן װעלװל wrote that as a Jew he does not feel “encouraged by most of the wins tonight. ” arguing that after Tuesday. “there will only be two Jews in Congress representing NYC. ” and that one got there by “abandoning us and repeating rhetoric he has admitted is dangerous for us.”.

The pushback isn’t only coming from outside the party. The remarks from House Democratic leadership aimed to ring-fence the political fallout. After the NYC primary. a quote attributed to Jeffries said: “Listen. the mayor and I agree to strongly disagree about some of his endorsements.” The statement continued: “He’s got work to do in terms of the conversations that he’s going to have with members of Congress moving forward.”.

What happened Tuesday night is now colliding with a wider debate in Democratic politics: whether the party’s next generation of candidates—especially those backed by high-profile local power—will be judged, by voters and activists alike, through the lens of Israel and Jewish identity.

The immediate argument was loudest among those who believe the party has crossed a line. James Kirchick wrote on June 24, 2026, “With Darializa Chevalier’s victory tonight, publicly exulting in the mass murder of Jews is no longer a barrier to high office in the Democratic Party.”

At the same time, other observers framed the change as a political brand risk rather than only a moral one. Jeb Fain called the DSA “clownish” and pointed to what he described as a gap between the group’s “self-proclamation as a movement of the working-class” and what he said its voters overwhelmingly are instead.

The political shock also drew attention from figures tied to international and Democratic institutions. Jamie Metzl wrote a longer message after June 23. 2026. describing his background working for President Clinton. in the State Department for Madeleine Albright. and with the United Nations in Cambodia. He said he believes “the most important role of any government is to protect the most vulnerable people in society and create…”.

Even with the primaries already settled, the emotional center of gravity is now shifting beyond the districts themselves. The same election results are being read as either a triumph of a new Democratic bloc—or as evidence that. in New York City at least. parts of the party’s orbit are becoming less safe for Jews to feel fully at home.

  1. I don’t even know these people but the headline says hateful slate so it’s probably worse than they’re saying. Also if she said Israel doesn’t exist then… yeah that’ll do it.

  2. Wait, I thought Dan Goldman already lost like last year? News sites move so fast I can’t keep track. Either way, “Liberal Zionist” sounds made up, but the prison/police/borders thing is def gonna scare regular folks.

  3. This is exactly why people don’t trust Democrats anymore. It’s not even about the seats, it’s like the party’s picking sides and then acting surprised when pro-Israel folks feel targeted. But then again NY politics is always crazy so maybe it’s just a temporary vibe thing. Still, “hateful slate” from the Post is pretty wild though.
