New video released of woman arrested in deadly 2023 Folly Beach DUI crash

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCSC) — A new video has been released of the DUI suspect who was sentenced for killing a newlywed bride three years ago.

Jamie Komoroski slammed into the back of a golf cart the night of April 28, 2023, at 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Ashley Avenue. Samantha Miller, the newlywed bride in the golf cart, was killed at the scene in the crash, and her husband, Aric Hutchinson, and two relatives were injured.

The newly released video showed Komoroski repeatedly asking the officer who brought her into the room if she could call her father. She also repeatedly refused to take a breathalyzer test to check her blood alcohol level, according to the documents received from the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

She was then taken to MUSC for blood samples that were sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for testing, and they reported her blood alcohol level to be 0.261%, more than three times the legal limit in South Carolina.

After the crash, she told officers that she had a beer and a drink with tequila about an hour before the crash. She also responded that she was at an eight when asked how she felt on a scale of one to ten, with one being completely sober and ten being the most impaired, according to the affidavit.

Hutchinson filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her two years ago, which alleged that she was drinking and bar hopping all day and that the places she visited did not act with the level of caution in serving alcoholic beverages. The lawsuit names Bottle Cap Holdings, LLC, El Gallo Bar and Grill, Snapper Jacks, The Crab Shack and The Drop-In Bar.

Taco Boy was dropped from the lawsuit after they argued Komoroski did not step foot into the business that day. The lawsuit alleged Komoroski, who was an employee there, was pressured to participate in a work function earlier in the night of the crash in which there was excessive drinking.

Investigators said Komoroski was driving 65 mph when she struck the golf cart. Hutchinson’s family members were taking the couple to their rental home hours after they got married when the crash occurred.

Komoroski has since been sentenced to 25 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to felony DUI, two counts of DUI causing great bodily injury or death and reckless homicide.
