A new poll from Emerson College and The Hill out on Thursday found Secretary of State Marco Rubio outperforming Vice President JD Vance against Democrats in potential 2028 presidential match-ups.
The poll of 1,000 likely voters found that among the match-ups, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg fared the best in being elected president. Vance and Rubio were also pitted against leading Democratic nominee contenders: Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Buttigieg topped both Vance and Rubio by 5% – beating both 49 to 44%. Ossoff scored that same 49-44% margin over Vance, while beating Rubio 47 to 44%.
Newsom also beat Vance 49% to 44%, while he beat Rubio 48 to 46%. Harris beat Vance 49 to 45%, but lost to Rubio 43 to 48%.
Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, was the only Democrat to lose to both. Vance beat AOC 46 to 44%, while Rubio beat her 48 to 43%.
The poll’s summary also noted the data it found inside the Democratic Party on the rise of Democratic Socialists and compared the DSA to the Tea Party in 2010.
“Twenty-three percent of voters consider themselves supporters of the Democratic Socialists of America, 60% do not, and 17% are unsure. A version of this question was asked by CBS News in August 2010 among U.S. adults: 29% were supporters of the Tea Party movement, 54% were not supporters, and 17% were unsure,” noted Emerson’s summary.
“Forty-six percent of Democrats consider themselves DSA supporters, while 30% do not and 25% are not sure,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said, adding, “This is concentrated among younger members of the party: 53% of Democrats under 50 support the DSA compared to 37% of Democrats over 50 who support.”
The poll also carried some bad news for Republicans going into November’s midterms, finding that on a generic ballot 51% support Democrats while 43% are for the GOP and 6% remain undecided. The poll from August 16-17 carries a margin of error of 3%.
