Every film fan and TV obsessive has it: a list of movies and shows they know they need to watch because they know they will like them. For this writer, French dramedy series “Call My Agent” has long topped that list.
Part comedy, part drama, generously part entertainment industry farce, the series proved to be such a smash in its native country that Netflix bought the show in 2015, eventually helping shepherd it to four seasons. And, now, a movie.
The series follows a group of talent agents at the fictional agency ASK (Agence Samuel Kerr) as they navigate the demands of their many actor clients, all of whom are real celebrities playing versions of themselves for the apparent delight of the series’ many dedicated fans. The show wrapped in 2020, as the fictional agency closed, but rumors of a film have persisted. Six years later, a treat for fans old and new has arrived.
Per the streamer, the film picks up “five years after the agency closed its doors, [and] Andréa is finally ready to direct her first feature film. When her lead actor quits and she falls out with her producer, she joins forces with Noémie — now a successful reality TV producer — believing she can easily manipulate her. But as she faces a complete recasting, on-set disasters, and a legal battle threatening the custody of her daughter, everything begins to unravel. One by one, the former ASK colleagues converge on this high-tension film set. Each arrives with their own role, their ego, and a fair share of old grudges — little do they know what this reunion truly has in store for them.”
The film is directed by Emilie Noblet and written by Lison Daniel and series creator Fanny Herrero. It stars Camille Cottin, Laure Calamy, Thibault de Montalembert, Grégory Montel, Nicolas Maury, Fanny Sidney, Liliane Rovère, Laetitia Casta, Vincent Macaigne, Ophélia Kolb, Anne Marivin, and Laurent Lafitte. And, bonus for those looking for a Hollywood connection: it’s long been rumored that George Clooney will appear in a small cameo.
It has long been rumored (and backed up by this 2021 report from Vanity Fair France) that, after the release of the feature, a fifth season of the series would come next. All episodes of the show are now streaming on Netflix, so if you’ve ever been curious about this one, time to get binging.
