Reader warns new depot forces risky intersection crossing

The New Bus Depot that is being constructed at the corner of Lauzon and Tecumseh Road East has visually given that corner a very nice appearance. However, I do have a concern about its location. The buses up until this time have always docked behind Tecumseh Mall. If a person was at the Mall and had to take a bus home they were always easy to get to or transfer to other buses. I have seen people getting on buses with Walkers, Wheelchairs, Canes, old

people, blind people, people with mobility problems carrying heavy loads, mothers carrying babies and children, etc. When I think about this and the busy intersection they will have to cross to get to this new location it may be difficult for some. My question is, does anybody have a plan in place to help people in the winter when it’s icy, slippery, snowy, windy, cold or the hot summer, especially if it’s raining or storming? Perhaps a Crossing Guard is needed or maybe all the

surrounding stores like Walmart, Costco, Tecumseh Mall, etc. could chip in for a small trolley of some sort to drop people off who need the extra help to get to the New Bus Depot. It would be a nice courtesy gesture for those in need of this service. Charlene Newton Windsor, Ontario

  1. I saw the bus depot thing in the paper and thought same thing… people with wheelchairs are gonna have a heck of a time crossing when it’s storming. Winter here is no joke, they should have crossing guards or something at least.

  2. Wait so they’re making buses cross the intersection now? I thought drivers would just pull in behind the mall like before. If it’s “behind Tecumseh Mall” still then why would anyone need to cross… unless they’re changing the whole route or something.

  3. Walmart or whoever could really just run a little shuttle or drop off point, right? Also where are the sidewalks going to be in summer when it’s hot and everyone is walking anyway… and in the rain those corners get slick like instantly. I don’t even care about the nice look of it, the accessibility part is what worries me. If they don’t fix it, the old folks and people with walkers are basically gambling crossing there.
