Neuer Stays at Bayern as Urbig Gets Mentored

Neuer extends – Manuel Neuer has agreed to another one-year extension with Bayern Munich, keeping the 40-year-old as captain and first-choice goalkeeper while he mentors Jonas Urbig, seen as his long-term successor.

Bayern Munich’s season endgame will still revolve around Manuel Neuer, who has agreed to extend his contract for another year—buying the club one more season of his leadership between the posts.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, now in his 15th year with the German champion since joining the club, will head into another season as captain and first-choice despite fitness issues earlier this season. His performances in the Champions League have helped him remain central to Bayern’s plans.

Neuer has played 597 times for Bayern and is on track to become the fifth player in club history to reach 600 appearances. Backup Jonas Urbig, increasingly given playing time this season, is widely viewed as Neuer’s long-term successor, with Neuer’s role explicitly tied to mentoring that transition.

Bayern made the announcement on Friday ahead of its last Bundesliga match of the season on Saturday at home to Cologne. Neuer’s long-time understudy Sven Ulreich has also signed on for another year.

“Manuel and Sven will continue to support Jonas on his path to becoming the future of FC Bayern,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement.

Neuer’s extension lands after a successful league moment for Bayern: he won his 13th German league title a month ago. The club is also chasing the chance to make it a domestic double for the first time since 2020, with Bayern set to face Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23.

Neuer has been focused on Bayern since retiring from the German national team after Euro 2024. For Germany’s next tournament, Oliver Baumann of Hoffenheim is considered the likely starter at the World Cup next month.
