Netflix readies Bridgerton Season 5 as Fran turns inward

Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton Season 5 will center Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela, charting Francesca’s return to the marriage mart two years after Lord John Stirling’s death—while making the season’s central queer romance a major break from the nov

On the surface, Francesca Bridgerton’s next move sounds practical—two years after losing her beloved husband John, she decides to re-enter the marriage mart. But Netflix’s tease for Bridgerton’s fifth season makes clear that “practical” won’t be the whole story.

The streaming service announced that Season 5 will revolve around Hannah Dodd’s Francesca and Masali Baduza’s Michaela. The official synopsis sets the emotional stakes from the start: two years after losing John. Fran decides to re-enter the marriage mart for practical reasons. only to find Michaela returning to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate. With John’s cousin back in her orbit. Fran’s complicated feelings push her to question whether she can stick to what’s been laid out—or follow her inner passions.

Netflix’s setup matters because it picks up from where viewers last saw Francesca and Michaela: both still reeling from the sudden death of Lord John Stirling. Francesca is left widowed, while Michaela has lost her closest confidant. The two characters draw closer in the time of grief—an arc that will carry into whatever happiness comes next.

Hannah Dodd previously told Netflix that grieving isn’t something a person simply moves past. “I don’t think grieving is something that you get over. John’s going to be with Fran. and the impact of John will be with Fran forever.” The line reads like a warning and a promise at once—Fran’s past doesn’t evaporate when the season turns.

Season 5 is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked. and showrunner Jess Brownell says the series will keep Bridgerton’s recognizable mix of romance. laughs. and pathos. fueled by what she called “big-time yearning.” Brownell also framed the season’s tone in direct terms: “It’s going to be a season about queer joy. It is not going to be a season about queer trauma. … We’re having so much fun!”.

Off-screen, Baduza teased the push-and-pull at the heart of Michaela’s journey. Speaking to Tudum, she said the show would include a darker side while exploring Michaela’s struggle to show vulnerability. “She’s used to having all these walls up. I’m excited to tear down those walls and have her let Francesca in,” Baduza explained. She also said she wants viewers to see what Michaela’s longing looks like up close: “I’m excited for people to see her wanted so deeply and so badly…I’m excited for people to see Michaela yearn for Francesca.”.

That yearning is also where Bridgerton’s biggest departure from the original novels lands. In the books, Francesca’s love interest is named Michael, a man. But the fifth season is set to be the first in the series to place a queer love story at the center—shifting from Michael to Michaela and making a sapphic relationship the heart of the season. Brownell explained the decision by pointing to the show’s inclusive identity. “I feel like Bridgerton made its name in many ways on being an inclusive universe. and for queer stories to be left out of that would not feel right.” Speaking to Netflix. she called the choice “groundbreaking. ” adding: “To make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”.

Hannah Dodd and Baduza both echoed that excitement. Baduza said queer love stories have “traditionally been excluded from things like period dramas – and queer people did exist. have always existed. and will always exist”. She also said the goal is not just representation. but realism—“giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving them] a happily ever after.”.

Who will share that spotlight with Francesca and Michaela?. Netflix hasn’t confirmed the full cast for Season 5, but it has named several additions. The Sandman’s Tega Alexander will play Christopher, described as the Casanova son of Lord Anderson. Jacqueline Boastwain, known for Carnival Row, will portray Michaela’s mother, Helen. Gemma Knight of Mobland will appear as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth. an old friend of Michaela’s who serves as her confidante and London guide.

Netflix expects many familiar faces to return. including Ruth Gemmell as Violet Bridgerton. Claudia Jessie as Eloise Bridgerton. Golda Rosheuvel’s Queen Charlotte. Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury. Polly Walker as Portia Featherington. Lorraine Ashbourne’s Mrs. Varley, and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown. Nicola Coughlan has confirmed her return, but explained it will be in a more limited capacity.

There’s also already a clue from Coughlan herself about why some characters may feel different this time around. Speaking to the Dish from Waitrose podcast, she said: “Season five has started filming already, so I won’t be in it very much. But I’m always happy to come back.”

What hasn’t been settled yet is whether Simone Ashley, Luke Thompson, Phoebe Dynevor, or Jonathan Bailey will return. Netflix has also not released a definitive release date beyond a single promise: production was underway in late March, and the series will premiere on Netflix in 2027.

That timetable is shorter than the gap most Bridgerton fans have come to expect. The show has traditionally taken a break of two years between seasons. and Jess previously admitted the production team has been working to speed up the usual process. She told The Hollywood Reporter last year: “We are working to try and put the seasons out more quickly. but they do take eight months to film and then they have to be edited. and then they have to be dubbed into every language. And the writing takes a very long time as well, so we’re kind of on a two-year pace.”.

The news doesn’t stop at Season 5. Netflix announced seasons five and six of Bridgerton earlier this year. On the season four red carpet, Brownell said there are two sisters who will get their own love stories, hinting that Eloise will play the lead in season six.

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has also said she’s aiming for Bridgerton to run for a total of eight seasons, with one devoted to each of the show’s central siblings.

Until that longer arc fully unfolds, Netflix says seasons one to four of Bridgerton—and the spin-off series Queen Charlotte—are streaming now.

  1. Two years later and she’s just like “back to the marriage mart”??? Kinda depressing tbh but also I’m here for the drama. Queer romance as a big break from the book too? So they’re just gonna do whatever Netflix wants.

  2. So Francesca’s husband dies and she comes back to London to… date the cousin? I might be mixing stuff up, but doesn’t John’s cousin already have a thing with her? Netflix really said “let’s make it more intense” and I guess that’s cool? Also “tends to the Kilmartin estate” sounds like house chores with feelings.

  3. I saw the headline and was like nooooo not another marriage market episode, but then it says queer romance is the main thing so I’ll watch. If they’re going away from the novel… I mean Bridgerton always changes stuff, right? I just hope Fran actually finds peace instead of being pulled back and forth by Michaela and whatever London people expect.
