NCAA softball schedule tightens as World Series nears

At Devon Park in Oklahoma City, the NCAA Division I softball World Series shifted through elimination brackets from May 28 through Sunday, leading into Monday’s matchups and a best-of-3 championship series starting June 3.

Devon Park in Oklahoma City felt different on the final full day of the World Series bracket—less like a tournament and more like a set of do-or-die doors closing.

On Thursday, May 28, Texas Tech opened with an 8-0 win over Mississippi State in five innings in Game 1. Tennessee kept the momentum going in Game 2, beating Texas 6-3. Alabama handled UCLA 6-3 in Game 3. Nebraska pushed past Arkansas 5-3 in 10 innings in Game 4.

Friday, May 29 ended Mississippi State’s run. Texas Tech beat Mississippi State 4-0 in Game 5, and Mississippi State was eliminated. UCLA then surged in Game 6, routing Arkansas 11-0 in five innings; Arkansas was eliminated.

Saturday, May 30 brought a late finish for Tennessee and Texas Tech. Tennessee won 2-1 over Texas Tech in nine innings in Game 7. Alabama answered with a 5-1 win over Nebraska in Game 8.

Sunday, May 31 kept Texas and Nebraska in the spotlight. Texas beat Nebraska 3-1 in Game 9. Texas Tech and UCLA played what turned into a seven-run swing: Texas Tech won 8-7 in Game 10.

Monday, June 1 sets the stage for the final set of matchups before the championship series. Game 11 is Tennessee vs. Texas at noon. A second game between the same teams is scheduled as x-Game 12 at 2:30 p.m. Alabama faces Texas Tech in Game 13 at 7 p.m., followed by x-Game 14 at 9:30 p.m.

The championship series is a best-of-3 beginning Wednesday, June 3 with Game 1 at 8 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 at 8 p.m., and x-Game 3 is set for Friday, June 5 at 8 p.m., with teams TBD for the title series pairings.
