NCAA baseball regionals open Friday with 11 matchups

NCAA Division – Across a dozen Division I regional sites, Friday, May 29 begins a double-elimination slate where each game can send teams one step closer—or drop them into a must-win scenario—through Monday, June 1.

The NCAA Division I baseball regionals arrive with a brutal rhythm: double elimination, tight schedules, and a path that can flip with one swing. By Friday, May 29, a full set of opening games kicks off across the country, from Atlanta to Tuscaloosa, each pairing carrying its own kind of pressure.

In Atlanta, the Friday slate begins at noon with Game 1: Georgia Tech (48-9) vs. UIC (27-27-1). Later that evening, at 5 p.m., Game 2 sends The Citadel (35-24) against Oklahoma (32-21).

The Athens Regional in Athens, Ga. starts at 2 p.m. on Friday with Game 1: Liberty (41-19) vs. Boston College (36-21). At 7 p.m., Game 2 follows: Georgia (46-12) vs. LIU (30-20).

Auburn, Ala. hosts the Auburn Regional, where the first pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Game 1: Auburn (38-19) vs. Milwaukee (25-31). At 6 p.m., Game 2 is scheduled: NC State (32-22) vs. UCF (31-21).

Austin, Texas is next, with the Austin Regional launching at 1 p.m. Friday in Game 1: Texas (40-13) vs. Holy Cross (25-28). The night game comes at 6 p.m. as Game 2: Tarleton St. (37-19) vs. UC Santa Barbara (38-18).

In Chapel Hill, N.C., the Chapel Hill Regional opens with Game 1 at noon: East Carolina (36-22-1) vs. Tennessee (38-20). At 5 p.m., Game 2 is set: North Carolina (45-11-1) vs. VCU (37-23).

College Station, Texas runs the College Station Regional. On Friday at 4 p.m., Game 1 features Texas A&M (39-14) vs. Lamar University (34-25). At 9 p.m., Game 2 sends Texas St. (36-24) against Southern California (43-15).

Eugene, Ore. hosts the Eugene Regional, starting with Game 1 at 3 p.m. Friday: Washington St. (30-26) vs. Oregon St. (43-12). Later at 8 p.m., Game 2 pits Oregon (40-16) against Yale (30-13-1).

Gainesville, Fla. begins the Gainesville Regional at 1 p.m. Friday with Game 1: Florida (39-19) vs. Rider (33-18). At 6 p.m., Game 2 follows: Troy (32-29) vs. Miami (FL) (38-18).

Hattiesburg, Miss. sets the pace for the Hattiesburg Regional. Game 1 is at 2 p.m. on Friday: Southern Miss. (44-15) vs. Little Rock (36-26). At 7 p.m., Game 2 brings Jacksonville St. (46-13) against Virginia (36-21).

Lawrence, Kan. hosts the Lawrence Regional with a Friday opening at 1 p.m.: Kansas (42-16) vs. Northeastern (38-20). At 6 p.m., Game 2 is scheduled: Missouri St. (34-19) vs. Arkansas (39-20).

Lincoln, Neb. runs the Lincoln Regional starting at 4 p.m. Friday in Game 1: Nebraska (42-15) vs. South Dakota St. (24-31). At 9 p.m., Game 2 follows: Arizona St. (37-19) vs. Ole Miss (36-21).

The Los Angeles Regional opens Friday as well. Game 1 is at 3 p.m.: UCLA (51-6) vs. Saint Mary’s (CA) (34-25). At 8 p.m., Game 2 is scheduled: Cal Poly (36-22) vs. Virginia Tech (30-24).

Morgantown, W.Va. hosts the Morgantown Regional with Game 1 at noon on Friday: Kentucky (31-21) vs. Wake Forest (38-19). At 5 p.m., Game 2 sets West Virginia (39-14) against Binghamton (31-20).

Starkville, Miss. is home to the Starkville Regional, opening at 2 p.m. Friday: Mississippi St. (40-17) vs. Lipscomb (29-24). At 7 p.m., Game 2 follows: Louisiana (39-23) vs. Cincinnati (37-20).

Tallahassee, Fla. hosts the Tallahassee Regional. Friday’s Game 1 begins at 3 p.m.: Florida St. (38-17) vs. St. John’s (NY) (33-24). At 8 p.m., Game 2 is set: NIU (35-17) vs. Coastal Carolina (37-21).

Tuscaloosa, Ala. runs the Tuscaloosa Regional. Game 1 on Friday is at 2 p.m.: USC Upstate (33-28) vs. Oklahoma St. (37-20). At 7 p.m., Game 2 features Alabama (37-19) vs. Alabama St. (34-21).

Across every regional site, the schedule keeps moving once the first two games are in the books. On Saturday, May 30, Game 3 is the Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner, and Game 4 is the Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser. Sunday, May 31, brings Game 5: Game 4 winner vs. Game 3 loser, followed by Game 6: Game 3 winner vs. Game 5 winner. Monday, June 1, holds x-Game 7 as a rematch of Game 6.

With double elimination on the line, the opening matchups on Friday carry an extra edge: teams aren’t just starting the tournament—they’re trying to control what comes next.

  1. Wait Georgia Tech vs UIC at noon in Atlanta… that feels random. Also double elimination means one bad inning and you’re basically done right?

  2. So Georgia Tech is 48-9 but they play UIC first? I swear these matchups are always rigged for bigger schools. If Georgia loses game 2 to LIU then what, they just get eliminated automatically? Sounds stressful.

  3. I saw Auburn regional is at 1 p.m. then 6 p.m. and I’m like who designed this schedule. Also Chapel Hill has Tennessee vs East Carolina at noon?? I can’t even keep track, I thought regionals were like all weekend but apparently it’s nonstop thru Monday.
