Naomi Osaka’s Floral Nike Tennis Kit Carries a Symbolic Link Between Japan and Washington

Naomi Osaka may have leaned into symbolism with her latest Nike tennis kit at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night.

The four-time Grand Slam tennis champion sported a monochromatic pink look embellished with a bouquet of florals. During warmup for her match against American tennis player Ashlyn Krueger, Osaka kept on her hot pink Nike long-sleeve jacket, with the American athletic apparel brand’s logo cast in white just south of Osaka’s shoulder.

Circular flowers in shades of pink with white pistils cascaded from one shoulder to the waist and down the sleeves, adding another feminine element to the warm pink jacket.

The florals were also featured on Osaka’s tennis dress, cut in a sleeveless design with a flouncy, pleated hem. The color scheme carried through to her wristbands, visor and tennis shoes.

Osaka’s floral motif tennis kit may have held an extra element of sartorial symbolism. The small flowers featured throughout the Nike kit appeared to reference Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms, which generally reach their peak bloom in the springtime from March until April.

The cherry blossom is not a native tree of Washington D.C. and was actually a gift from Tokyo in the early 20th century. The effort to plant the trees was championed by first lady Helen Herron Taft in 1909. The first trees were planted by Taft and Viscountess Chinda, the wife of the Japanese ambassador, in March 1912 at the Tidal Basin near Independence Avenue.

Since she turned pro in October 2012, Osaka has represented Japan throughout her tennis career. The athlete was born in Osaka, Japan, though she and her family ultimately immigrated to the United States when she was 3 years old.

Osaka previously paid homage to her Japanese heritage at the 2026 edition of The Championships, Wimbledon, wearing a white Hana Yagi ensemble crafted to emulate ceremonial Japanese dress.

The Mubadala DC Open, held at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington D.C., kicked off on Monday and concludes on Sunday. Australian player Alex de Minaur seeks to defend his men’s singles title, while the women’s field features Osaka, American Jessica Pegula and more.
