Murphy Says Trump’s Vote Move Would ‘Rig The Election’

Sen. Chris Murphy sounded less worried about the congressional race he was asked about and more worried about the ground beneath American elections.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Murphy argued President Donald Trump is the “biggest threat” to the country. “Right now the biggest threat to this country are not a handful of House candidates in New York. ” he told host Ryan Nobles. “It is the president of the United States that is trying to destroy American democracy. and the Democratic Party. left. right and center is united around the fact that we need to protect this nation from Donald Trump’s attacks on the rule of law.”.

The interview turned to a fight in New York’s 13th Congressional District. where a Tuesday night primary produced a win for Darializa Avila Chevalier. a democratic socialist. Nobles asked Murphy for his reaction after a fellow Democrat, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, launched an attack ad against Chevalier.

In that ad. Espaillat called out Chevalier for saying “Fuck Kamala Harris” and accused former President Joe Biden of being a rapist in since-deleted tweets. Murphy framed the race as part of a larger democratic contest. telling Nobles. “Listen. it’s no secret. voters aren’t super happy with establishment Democrats or establishment Republicans these days.” He added. “I will say. though. what binds together I think every Democratic candidate that is running. including the ones in New York. is that they are standing up to protect American democracy.”.

Murphy’s comments then widened to Trump’s push for voting legislation—specifically the SAVE Act. He described Trump as the “most unpopular president in the recent history of this country” when asked whether he would support the president’s push to pass the SAVE Act. a measure that would require American voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

The senator spoke as Trump demanded earlier this month that Congress first pass the radical Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act before he signs a landmark bipartisan housing affordability bill aimed at repairing the national affordability crisis.

Murphy argued that framing about election security doesn’t hold up the way supporters of the act claim. Nobles pressed him on what. if anything. Murphy believed was at stake in Connecticut’s elections—whether the state is secure enough to justify such a federal requirement. Murphy responded by pointing to the intent behind the legislation, not the mechanics. “I mean, it depends on what it looks like in Connecticut. You know, we have safe and secure elections. This whole idea behind the SAVE Act is trying to push a mythology that our elections aren’t secure. are rigged. That’s not true. The problem with the SAVE Act is that they don’t really care about the voter ID provision.”.

But Murphy said the bill’s advocates were not focused on any voter-ID problem as a practical matter. “That’s not why they’re pushing the SAVE Act,” he told Nobles.

Nobles then interjected to ask Murphy directly whether he thinks requiring Americans to have a photo ID to vote should be necessary. Murphy’s answer was blunt: “There’s no evidence, zero evidence in this country, that there is a problem at scale with people faking their identification in elections.”

He returned to his central point about what the legislation is really for. “And again, let’s just dispense with the idea that that’s what this bill is about. That’s not what this bill is about. This bill is about trying to create a national voter list that creates the pretext for Donald Trump to try to say that state elections have been rigged or manipulated.”.

The segment ended with Murphy’s appearance on “Meet the Press” made available through the program’s broadcast link.

  1. SAVE Act… rig the election? I thought those were like voting rules, not magic. Also why is nobody talking about the tweet stuff like it’s no big deal? Seems like both sides are just throwing grenades.

  2. Wait so Murphy is worried about the “ground beneath American elections” but he also wants Congress to pass stuff? That’s kinda the same thing. And the New York district thing—Espaillat attacking her for saying “F Kamala” is wild, like I don’t even know who Chevalier is and now it’s all over my feed. Feels like distraction from the actual vote process.

  3. I don’t get it. Every election is “rigged” according to whoever’s losing, so Murphy saying Trump would “create the pretext” sounds like they’re admitting they already planned to blame him. And SAVE Act sounds like it should save votes?? Maybe I’m mixing it up with something else. Also the whole “rapist” allegation… deleted or not, that’s still gonna be stuck in people’s heads. Not saying Murphy is wrong, just seems like everyone’s just escalating for attention.
