By 7:18 a.m. on Tuesday, the spill-response crews at Longview were no longer dealing with what they first described as a chemical explosion.

The incident happened at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company in Longview. Washington. where a vat of chemical treatment product imploded. authorities said. The Longview Fire Department said the hazardous materials incident began at approximately 7:18 a.m. and that the implosion involved the chemical treatment product contained in the vat.

Multiple people were injured. The fire department said some suffered chemical burns, and that they were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. How badly those patients were hurt was unclear at the time of the department’s alert.

Fire crews and a Hazardous Materials Team remained on scene, working with Nippon Dynawave employees to mitigate the product and the container involved, the Longview Fire Department said in an alert posted on social media.

Authorities also said there was no immediate threat to the public. Still, residents were urged to avoid the area while the response was underway.

The facility sits on the Washington-Oregon border near the Columbia River. It is a kraft pulp and paper mill and liquid packaging plant, according to the Washington Department of Ecology.

The story is still developing as crews continue their work to manage the hazardous materials tied to the implosion.

  2. So it was a chemical explosion but then they said it was an implosion. Either way, seems like poor safety or they didn’t check the vats. Also why is this near the Columbia River?? That river is basically everybody’s backyard.

  3. Longview on the WA/OR border… I used to drive by that packaging place. They always smell weird over there. Kinda crazy they’re saying no threat to the public while people are getting burns, like how do you measure that real quick?
