MSG watch party canceled; security plan set for Game 4

MSG watch – The Knicks canceled an outside-Madison Square Garden watch party set for Wednesday night, redirecting fans to Wollman Rink and Brooklyn Bowl. Officials have also laid out a tighter NYPD security perimeter for Game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs, including veh

Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the Knicks announced an outside watch party planned for Madison Square Garden would not happen. Inside the arena. the stakes were already high—Game 4 of the NBA Finals is set for 8:30 p.m.—but outside. the shift was immediate. The team said parties would go on instead at Wollman Rink and Brooklyn Bowl.

The cancellation landed after Madison Square Garden and its owner accused the mayor and the NYPD of turning the neighborhood into a “police state” and insisted fans should be allowed to gather outside the arena. unrestricted. The day’s argument was emotional even before tipoff. and it played out against a backdrop of the chaos that followed the Knicks’ loss on Monday night.

After that loss, Knicks fans spilled out of Bryant Park onto neighboring streets and fights broke out, leading to 21 arrests. With the city and the NYPD weighing public safety against the desire for fans to celebrate together. a permit had already been approved for 999 ticketed attendees for Wednesday’s outdoor watch party.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he understands the decision is hurting people across New York. “We want to encourage every New Yorker to celebrate in this moment. to do so responsibly and to be looking out for one another through it all. ” he said. For many fans. the watch party wasn’t just entertainment—it was the plan to share the moment as a crowd. not in isolation.

An MSG official offered a different framing. “The Knicks never agreed to what the city proposed,” the official said. “So the watch party outside MSG was not canceled in the traditional sense. The Knicks do not agree to what the city proposed.”

Some fans said the cancellation made sense. But bar owner Mike O’Brien called it overkill, saying, “Game Three? We had 30 people in here, tops.”

For Michael Kellman, who came to New York from Chicago, Wednesday’s change was disappointing. “But I think the watch parties are still going to go on,” he said. “They’re still going to go on. OK, this is New York. Yes, it is-unofficially. There’ll be unofficial watch parties.”

The Knicks’ decision comes amid a pattern of tightening restrictions around where fans are allowed to gather. During the conference finals last month. the NYPD announced it would not support watch parties outside the arena. citing “very rough” crowds as a public safety threat. That decision was later reversed after the Knicks reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. Registration for the watch parties is available on the Knicks website.

With the Game 4 crowd expected to move through a controlled corridor around the arena, the NYPD security plan for Wednesday was spelled out with unusually specific instructions.

The perimeter will run from West 29th Street to West 35th Street, between Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue. Within that perimeter. starting at 4 p.m. Seventh Avenue between West 29th Street and West 35th Street will be closed to vehicular and general pedestrian traffic. Eighth Avenue will remain open to vehicular traffic, though it can be subject to traffic closure if conditions require it. Unless someone is going to the game or has business in the area, pedestrians are told to avoid the zone.

Starting at 4 p.m. no one will be allowed inside the secure area unless they have a ticket to the game. a train ticket. are going to a business inside the area. live in the area. hold credentials. or have some other authorized reason. Everyone entering the secure area will be screened. Screening locations open at 4:30 p.m. and the NYPD urged fans to arrive early enough to get through the security points.

For people authorized to enter, four designated entry points will be used, with screening at each:

West side of Sixth Avenue at West 33rd Street
West side of Sixth Avenue at West 32nd Street
West side of Eighth Avenue at West 33rd Street
Northeast corner of Eighth Avenue and West 30th Street

Businesses inside the perimeter—including bars and restaurants between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and between Seventh and Eighth Avenues—will be allowed to operate with strict capacity limits. Anyone planning to frequent those locations will need to be screened at a security checkpoint. and the NYPD said it will help facilitate access to those businesses.

Certain items will not be permitted inside the secure area, including backpacks, bags, alcohol, or umbrellas. The only exception applies to travelers entering Penn Station, who will be allowed to carry bags needed for travel but will still be subject to security screening.

After the game, fans leaving Madison Square Garden will be able to access public transit at Penn Station. If leaving by foot or car, the exits from the arena will be routed to Seventh Avenue or Eighth Avenue. Exiting onto Eighth Avenue allows walking southbound only on the east side of Eighth Avenue until reaching 28th Street. and east and west egress from Eighth Avenue will only be possible starting at 28th Street. If exiting onto Seventh Avenue. fans can walk southbound on the west side of Seventh Avenue until 28th Street. or walk eastbound on 32nd Street until reaching Sixth Avenue.

For taxis and ride services, vehicle access after the game will be limited to specific intersections: West 28th Street and Eighth Avenue; West 28th Street and Seventh Avenue; or West 32nd Street and Sixth Avenue.

For access to transportation at Moynihan Train Hall and Penn Station—including Amtrak. LIRR. and the subway—the NYPD said to use entrances to Moynihan Station on the west side of Eighth Avenue at 31st and 33rd Streets. outside the secure area. The plan also states that no service changes or disruptions are anticipated as a result of the security measures.

Game 4 between the Knicks and Spurs tips off at 8:30 p.m. Pre-game coverage begins at 7:30 p.m., and the game is scheduled to air on ABC 7. The Knicks lead the series 2-1.
