Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith returned to motion after a two-year stretch marked by casting deal issues, creative differences, and an indefinite delay. Season 2 is now set to begin production in Los Angeles, with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine returning, and
Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith started streaming life in 2024 with momentum that looked impossible to slow down. In its first three days of availability, the series earned just shy of 1 billion minutes viewed, and it quickly became the most-watched series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries.
In the U.S., it also ranked as one of the top five new series debuts of all time for Amazon by total viewers. That surge came with serious awards heat too: the opening season racked up 16 Emmy nominations and won two.
Then the course changed.
Casting deal issues and creative differences put Season 2 into a difficult position, and production was announced as put on indefinite delay last year. The pause stretched long enough to feel like the show’s early triumph had stalled in mid-air.
But the slow-burn uncertainty appears to be ending. Production is now starting in Los Angeles last month, bringing Season 2 back on track.
Michael (Donald Glover) and Alana (Maya Erskine) are set to return for the second season. though their exact roles are still unclear. The expectation is that younger Mr. and Mrs. Smith pairs will take center stage next. One of those pairs has been linked to Talia Ryder and Mark Eydelshteyn. while another pair is expected to feature one of Hollywood’s most famous names.
Alongside that shifting cast landscape. a new report says Francesca Scorsese—who appeared in Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point—will star as Jane Smith in Season 2. Scorsese has also appeared in a selection of hit shows. including HBO’s limited series We Are Who We Are. co-created and directed by Luca Guadagnino.
There’s also word that Glover will return to direct multiple episodes of the second season after his behind-the-camera work on the Season 1 finale, “A Breakup.”
The show’s return to production arrives as Prime Video keeps riding the broader spy-thriller buzz. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is available to stream on Prime Video. and the series—created by Schuyler Pappas and Adamma Ebo—has a February 1. 2024 release date. For now. the biggest question is simple: with production restarted in Los Angeles and younger pairs expected to take the spotlight. how big will the reboot feel once Season 2 finally arrives?.
