Layla Taylor didn’t just talk about identity on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast—she described the long stretch of uncertainty that followed her back to childhood.
On the show, the 25-year-old reality star from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives said she “didn’t really know how to formally address” what she was feeling for a long time. Then she put it plainly: “I’m gay and I’m bi and date women and men.”
Taylor grew up in a conservative Mormon community in Utah. explaining that her earliest years were shaped by not fitting in. “Growing up. I didn’t fit in for a lot of reasons in my childhood. ” she said. adding that she was raised in a predominantly white area and “being a little Black girl. I already stood out so much to my peers.”.
As she looked back. Taylor connected the dots between what she didn’t have language for and what she felt anyway. She recalled watching Pretty Little Liars and seeing Shay Mitchell kiss a girl. saying. “Wait. why is that hot?” The kind of queer representation she saw helped her tell herself. “Ok. this is normal.”.
But the questions didn’t disappear. Taylor said she also wondered whether her attraction to women “was just a phase.”
When her personal life moved forward, she kept those parts of herself hidden while married to Clayton Wessell. Taylor and Wessell now share two children, and she reflected on how she “underplay[d] it for a long period of my life.”
“I just feel like I’m finally in the era that I’m over not being truly myself and I’m over not showing every part of Layla to the world,” Taylor said. “I’m very proud now to be out.”
Her honesty didn’t stop with labels. During the conversation. Taylor surprised viewers by confirming she has started a relationship with a woman. though she did not reveal the girlfriend’s identity. She also described the pace of the relationship. saying. “At least who I’m talking to right now. she’s been very understanding and letting me take this at my own pace because it is still foreign to me and it is new.”.
The update lands after Taylor’s split from Chase McWhorter earlier this year. In February. she announced they were no longer together in a TikTok video after fans noticed the two had unfollowed each other on social media. “Me and Chase are no longer together, and it’s still super fresh,” she said through tears in the clip. She added that they were “on two different paths right now. ” explaining that he felt “in order for him to grow. he had to be on his own.”.
While Taylor said there was “no bad blood” between them, she later posted a follow-up TikTok to take back that statement.
