Cape Town City kept their promotion hopes alive after beating Milford 1-0 at the Richards Bay Stadium in the playoffs on Saturday, June 6. Jan Vreman’s side needed maximum points in Richards Bay after losing their first two matches and their dream of making a swift return to the Betway Premiership appeared to be quickly fading before Therlo Moosa popped up with the winner seven minutes from time. It was the Citizens’ first-ever victory against the Stallions, who still top the table on six points
and could earn a historic promotion with a win against Magesi on 13 June. City nearly fell behind in the opening stages when a goalmouth scramble saw Miguel Timm come to their rescue with a last-ditch clearance off the line. But the visitors went close at the other end on 27 minutes as Jaedin Rhodes curled a shot against the frame of the goal from an acute angle inside the box. Milford survived another scare a few minutes later when Moosa failed to hit the
target with a header from Heaven Sereetsi’s teasing cross from the right. The hosts made a bright start to the second half and threatened to break the deadlock almost immediately as Siphosethu Ndlabi latched onto a loose ball with the goal at his mercy, but failed to even test Luca Olario. Xanti Pupuma’s side proved wasteful once more in the latter stages of the game after Nqaba Xulu found himself clean through on goal from Olwethu Cele’s pass, only to fire wide of the post.
City would make them pay on 83 minutes when Moosa got away from his marker to convert Sereetsi’s cross from the left to score what could turn out to be his most important goal for the club.
