Mike Brown tells Knicks to block outcome talk

With the New York Knicks holding a 3-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, head coach Mike Brown says the team’s key is staying “present” and thinking only about the next play heading into Game 5.
The New York Knicks returned to San Antonio on Thursday after a tense Game 4 win over the Spurs, a victory built on a wild late comeback. They erased a 29-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation and now sit one game from the NBA Championship.
But with the finish line close. Mike Brown is trying to prevent the usual trap that comes with momentum and a commanding series lead. Ahead of Saturday night’s Game 5 at 8:30 PM EST on ABC. the Knicks head coach urged his team to stay locked into the moment rather than letting their minds drift toward what happens next.
“ The biggest thing is everybody has to stay present,” Brown said during the team’s media availability on Friday. “You have to stay present. you cant think about the outcome. It’s about the process. It’s just about the next play, the next play, the next play. Sometimes. you can think about the process and it doesn’t work out. but when you’re playing against other great teams especially. that’s how you have to take it because anybody’s mind can start wandering when you think about the outcome.”.
Brown’s message lands with extra weight because the Knicks have already shown they can survive chaos. In Game 4, Jalen Brunson scored a game-high 36 points for New York, finishing with five rebounds and seven assists. OG Anunoby followed with a playoff career-high 33 points, a game-saving block, and the game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining.
As Game 5 approaches. Brown’s focus sounds like a deliberate choice: the Spurs won’t simply fold after being down 3-1. and closeout games tend to be the hardest moments of a series. For New York. the challenge isn’t just carrying the confidence of Thursday’s comeback—it’s protecting concentration once the outcome starts to feel inevitable.
Game 5 between the Knicks and Spurs is set to tip off at 8:30 PM EST on ABC, with San Antonio looking for a lifeline and New York trying to keep its attention where Brown wants it: the next play.
Mike Brown Knicks Spurs NBA Finals Game 5 Jalen Brunson OG Anunoby process not outcome
So basically don’t get cocky? Knicks in 5 or nah.
I swear every coach says “stay present” but then they still let the game slip. Spurs always have some random comeback energy. Also Game 4 was wild like… 29 points??
Outcome talk? That’s literally what people are doing by watching the Finals. If Knicks win Game 5 then it’s the outcome anyway lol. I don’t get it. Like he wants them to just ignore the scoreboard?
This feels like coach speak but I get the point. Game 4 comeback would mess with your head and then you start thinking you’re already champions. That OG Anunoby tip in was crazy, 1.2 seconds is insane. I guess Mike Brown wants them to not let the Spurs do “momentum math” or whatever, but at the same time momentum is literally the whole game.
