Michael Johnston’s breakout “Obsession” turns fandom personal

Michael Johnston’s – Michael Johnston, a Rutherfordton, N.C. native, is drawing attention for his role as Baron “Bear” Bailey in the horror thriller “Obsession.” As he prepares for broader visibility after speaking publicly about his sexuality, queer fans say his earlier roles hel

When Michael Johnston walks deeper into the spotlight, it’s not just because his latest thriller is catching fire. It’s also because people who recognize themselves in his onscreen characters are showing up with their own stories.

Maybe you first saw him play the gay character Corey in the Teen Wolf TV series. Or perhaps you remember him from the 2021 film Endangered Species. Now, Johnston is heating up the silver screen as the beleaguered shy guy Bear in Obsession.

In the hit movie. Johnston plays Baron “Bear” Bailey. a man working at a music store with an unrequited love for his childhood friend and coworker. Nikki Freeman—played by Inde Navarrette. The relationship sits at the center of the story. until Bear breaks a mysterious toy that grants the user one wish. He asks for Nikki to fall in love with him. The wish comes true, but the consequences arrive fast—horrifying enough to leave Bear fighting for his life.

Last month. Johnston discussed his sexuality for the first time—and he tied it directly to the role that turned him into a name for many queer viewers. In an interview with Anthem Magazine, the 30-year-old Rutherfordton, N.C. native said playing a gay teenager when he was 19 was “a total coincidence.”.

“If I’m being honest, that was really scary, especially coming from North Carolina — the Bible Belt,” he said. “Before Teen Wolf, there was also another movie I did called Slash. My character in that one is questioning. He’s trying to figure out who he is and what he likes.”

Johnston also revealed that he received a ton of fan mail from LGBTQ+ viewers—people who told him his characters helped them. “I did get thousands of messages and letters from fans thanking me. saying how much my character in Teen Wolf helped them. I had no idea what that representation would be,” he said.

Two years ago, Johnston did a video with Fr Conventions. In it, he said his Teen Wolf role “gave me the confidence to come out, or it just made me feel really good about myself. I really didn’t ever think that it could have that kind of impact.”

“I am very proud of who I am. But at the same time, I wasn’t sitting there thinking about how meaningful that representation would be. I approach every role with the same honesty and try to find the humanity in it. Love is universal — that’s how I approach every role. A character’s sexuality isn’t the first thing I’m looking at. It’s more important that I connect with the story. Playing these characters has absolutely helped me to better understand who I am.”.

That personal resonance is traveling alongside the film’s momentum.

Gay Times calls him one of the breakout stars of 2026 and predicts his leading role in the horror flick has him on track to become one of the most profitable films of all time. The film’s budget is reported as $750K.

Obsession. written and directed by Curry Barker. leans hard into genre instincts—and it’s not hiding what kind of night it wants to give audiences. The supernatural horror film has an R-rating and a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Johnston has said the blood-heavy content is what ultimately shaped his “obsession.”.

The story itself is built for a very particular kind of dread: a toy that promises love, a wish that lands, and then the cost that comes with getting what you think you want. Johnston’s Bear breaks the toy, makes his request, and then the movie turns the consequences into survival.

And now, as audiences hunt for the trailer and look closer at the actor behind Bear, the same question threads through conversations: what happens when representation isn’t just something people watch—it becomes something people rely on?

  1. Sounds like the movie is gonna be way too dark, but I can’t lie the wish thing sounds kinda cool.

  2. Wait, so the toy grants one wish and then it’s like horror consequences? That feels like every cautionary story ever. Also North Carolina being “Bible Belt” like… okay.

  3. I don’t get it, people are saying the fandom got personal because he talked about being gay, but isn’t that just… his job? Like he’s acting as Bear and that’s the story, not real life. Unless the toy is real? lol

  4. Teen Wolf was YEARS ago and now suddenly everyone cares again. I read somewhere he was in Endangered Species and I thought that was like a true crime thing, but now it’s horror? Anyway I’m glad he’s speaking up, even if it’s “scary” in NC or whatever.
