Mets interim manager Andy Green gives encouraging update on Carson Benge X-rays

The Mets caught a break on what could have been a costly injury Friday night. Interim manager Andy Green confirmed that X-rays on rookie outfielder Carson Benge’s left wrist came back negative after he jammed it into the outfield wall during New York’s 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.’

Benge had crashed into the corner in left field while making a sliding, highlight-reel catch to rob Ronny Simon of extra bases, lingering on the ground for several seconds before tossing the ball back to the infield.

“Had X-rays on the left wrist. It was negative,” Green told reporters. “We’ll see how he wakes up in the morning and determine if he potentially needs more tests. It’s a little stiff right now for him. He made an unbelievable catch and just kind of jammed it into the wall.”

Benge stayed in the game briefly after the catch but was ultimately replaced by Cristian Pache before the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Mets already holding a comfortable 6-0 lead at the time. He finished the night 2-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base, continuing a strong recent stretch that has him hitting .304 over his last 30 games and raised his season average to .270.

The rookie has quickly become an important piece of New York’s lineup since debuting in March. A first-round pick out of Oklahoma State in the 2024 draft, Benge entered Friday’s game batting .267 with 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases across his first full season in the majors, numbers that have made him a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate.

With the Mets still holding X-rays as the only imaging done so far, the team’s next update is expected to come Saturday once Benge has had a chance to sleep on the injury. For a Mets team relying heavily on its rookie’s production down the stretch, avoiding any structural damage would be a significant relief.
