Meta’s Meta Business Agent rolls out across WhatsApp

Meta is making its customer support AI agent—now called Meta Business Agent—available globally inside WhatsApp. After nearly two years of testing in countries including India and Mexico, the AI can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointmen
For years, WhatsApp has been where small businesses go to answer questions fast and keep conversations going. Now Meta wants that same chat space to start doing more of the work.
On Wednesday, Meta said its customer support AI bot—known as Meta Business Agent—is being rolled out globally within WhatsApp. Meta said it has spent nearly two years testing AI agents in WhatsApp Business for customer support in countries including India and Mexico.
Meta Business Agent is built to handle multiple tasks inside the app: it can answer customer questions, recommend products, book appointments, qualify sales leads, and reroute queries to a person if needed. Meta also plans to make the bot available inside Instagram DMs.
Meta is not stopping at customer support. It is testing a way for the Business Agent to provide daily briefings of chats that occurred overnight, along with insights. That testing is being done with select accounts on WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite.
The company says it is working to add more capabilities as well—doing market research, highlighting product features, managing users’ calendars, and connecting with tools to extract competitive insights.
Another feature Meta is building toward is discovery. It says it’s working to enable the Agent to surface businesses when a person searches for one or shares contact details in chat.
For bigger companies, Meta also says it is building a platform that would let larger enterprises create custom agents. Those agents would be able to connect to systems like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee.
Meta’s rollout is also tied to how it plans to charge. The company said it plans to charge businesses for using the AI agent by including it in some tiers of its WhatsApp Business Premium subscription. For large businesses, Meta said it will charge for the agent based on how many tokens they use.
That matters because WhatsApp’s business model has long depended on businesses paying for messaging and click-to-WhatsApp ads. With this global expansion. Meta is trying to move the conversation from “messaging” into something that starts to resemble workflow software—one question. one appointment. and one rerouted query at a time.

So it’s like WhatsApp turning into customer service robots now? Cool I guess.
Not gonna lie, this sounds creepy like they’re gonna read everything I type. If my business uses it, who’s actually “answering” my customers? Also the word tokens makes it sound like a scam.
I thought this was already in there and I didn’t notice. Like I’ll be talking to a store and then it’s just gonna start booking appointments?? Next thing you know it’s recommending random stuff and I’m stuck with it. Do they even verify inventory or is it just guessing?
Meta really wants to be your whole business scheduler now… which sounds convenient until it routes me to a person and they’re like “we don’t do that.” Also charging by tokens? That’s literally how crypto people talk, so idk feels related. I can see small businesses loving it but I also feel like customer complaints will get worse when the AI “misunderstands.”
