Meta settles Kentucky school district lawsuit before trial

Meta settles – Meta has reached a settlement in a Kentucky school district lawsuit weeks before it was due to go to trial in California, bringing the case to an end after claims that major platforms harmed students’ mental health. The settlement lands just a week after Snap,
A Kentucky school district won’t have to take Meta to trial.
Court documents show Meta reached a settlement in the lawsuit weeks before the case was scheduled to go to trial in California. The action had accused Meta, Snap, YouTube and TikTok of harming students’ mental health—harm that the district said has strained school resources.
The timing matters. The settlement arrived a week after Snap, YouTube and TikTok reached a settlement in the same case. In a statement. a Meta spokesperson said. “We’ve resolved this case amicably and remain focused on our longstanding work to build protections like Teen Accounts that help teens stay safe online. while giving parents simple controls to support their families.”.
The Kentucky case was the first on the calendar among a wave of lawsuits. More than 1,000 school districts around the country have sued Meta and other social media companies. Even with the Kentucky settlement. Meta and the other companies remain in the middle of ongoing fights tied to other districts. including cases mentioned in New York and Seattle.
Lawyers for the Kentucky school district said their attention stays on the broader docket. Their statement said their focus “remains on pursuing justice for the remaining 1,200 school districts who have filed cases.”
The question now is what the settlement changes—and what it doesn’t—for Meta’s safety narrative. The company is already trying to avoid another high-profile courtroom fight over online safety.
A Los Angeles jury recently ruled against Meta and YouTube in another trial over social media addiction. That case included testimony from Mark Zuckerberg and other executives. Meta has also faced regulatory consequences: it was recently ordered to pay a $375 million fine following a trial in New Mexico over its safety practices. and the company said it plans to appeal the ruling.
Taken together, the Kentucky settlement doesn’t erase the pressure building in these cases. It only shifts the next headline: another district will still bring the fight to court. and Meta will still be forced to defend how its platforms affect students—at least in the cases still waiting for their day in front of a jury.
