Meta layoffs and AI training collide in engineer parody

On the morning he left Meta, an engineer named David Frenk posted a farewell parody on an internal message board—one that staff say landed like a confession about a company changing its soul.

This week, Meta laid off 8,000 employees—10 percent of the company’s staff—and reassigned another 7,000 to train AI models. Fear of the layoffs had been building around the company for weeks as Meta shifted from a culture built by coders to one that has staked its future on AI. Frenk’s parting shot turned that tension into a song.

His parody. set to the tune of Don McLean’s “American Pie. ” appeared in an internal chat called “@shitposting. ” which has about 20. 000 members. He posted it as a “badge post. ” a Meta tradition for employees leaving the company to offer tributes to coworkers and co-creation. But Frenk turned the farewell into a high-production “crusade in C major. ” and staff urged him to share it on YouTube so the company’s problems couldn’t stay contained.

Frenk left of his own accord, and his last day was described as “today” in the account of the posting. The video recounted what he framed as the start of a tectonic shift at Meta—asking workers to train AI, and then laying thousands off.

One former employee, who asked not to be identified, described the personal contradiction of the moment. “There’s a bit of a disconnect,” the former employee said. “This is a company of really smart people who work really hard—coders. engineers. designers—people whose creativity and intellect is a part of their job. And you are being told that this AI agent can do it better than you. and you are being asked to train it.”.

In Frenk’s version of “American Pie,” Meta executives show up through name checks and internal references. Andrew Bosworth—Meta’s Chief Technology Officer and a 20-year veteran at the company—is mentioned multiple times for promoting an internal monitoring software called MCI. or Model Capability Initiative. According to the account, MCI was installed on the computers of US employees this spring.

The software is described as tracking how humans interact with their screens. capturing mouse clicks and keyboard strokes to train AI to appear more “human-like.” Frenk’s parody ties that internal monitoring to a loss of “professional pride. ” including lyrics that call for rejecting MCI and insisting “the human touch” can’t be replaced with AI.

When the initiative was rolled out internally, the former employee said one of the top comments on an internal message board was: “how do I opt out?”

Frenk’s video is now circulating beyond its original audience. It has tens of thousands of views on Meta’s internal messaging system. while many of the comments are from accounts deactivated after Wednesday’s layoffs. The timing of the reaction matters: the video threads together record-high profits. executives receiving huge raises. and the immediate reality that 8. 000 workers were let go.

In the parody. Frenk references the pressure to “get more lean. ” asking: “Why did execs’ paychecks grow so obscene?” The former employee said the remarks may be wrapped in humor. but they felt accurate. “It all feels a bit off,” the former employee said. “In a lighthearted way. even if you really. fully believe that this is the direction to go down. everything [in the video] still rings true.” Meta did not respond to a request for comment.

After the post began to spread internally. it moved into Blind. a message board for current and former tech workers from companies including Meta and Google. On Blind. people posted that the video “made me tear up” and “touched my soul.” In the video’s lyrics. the message is blunt: “Do you work at Meta?. Send tips securely to the Center for Investigative Reporting at cirtips@protonmail.com.”.

The sequence of facts in this farewell isn’t subtle. Meta asked employees to help train AI while cutting 10 percent of its workforce. and Frenk’s parody used familiar company references—MCI. Bosworth. and the internal “badge post” tradition—to show what many workers described as a growing disconnect. For staff watching from inside the company. the question became less about whether the direction would change—and more about what it would cost. and who would pay for it first.

  1. So wait, they laid off 8k and then hired more to train AI? Or is it the same people but pretend jobs? Also the “American Pie” thing sounds like dude was salty and honestly good for him.

  2. Confession about a company changing its soul?? lol it’s not that deep. The real issue is AI training is just replacing workers anyway. If he posted on @shitposting then yeah that’s basically admitting it was all falling apart before he left.

  3. I don’t even know if this is real like 100% cuz half the time those internal boards leak everything. But if it happened, that’s messed up that they can call it reassignment like it’s not layoffs. Also “crusade in C major” like what?? sounds like some music nerd coded it. David Frenk probably knew he was gone anyway, so he made it dramatic. People gonna do what they do when they get pushed out.
