Mercury news: Kelsey Plum gets status update for potential Phoenix debut after trade
Kelsey Plum is beginning yet another chapter in her decorated career, as she is now with the Phoenix Mercury after being traded by the Los Angeles Sparks. The move allowed Plum to reset, with the Mercury strengthening their roster for a postseason push.
The veteran guard, however, is still recovering from a leg injury, which has kept her sidelined for over a month already. She sat out the All-Star Game in Chicago last week.
But according to Mercury reporter Shane Young, the two-time champion could play against the Chicago Sky.
“Mercury guard Kelsey Plum is listed as questionable for Monday’s game versus Chicago, pending physical results,” wrote Young on X.
That is certainly good news for Phoenix, which saw its three-game winning streak get snapped by the New York Liberty on Saturday. The Mercury, who have only 11 victories, are 4-6 in their last 10 games.
The 31-year-old Plum is averaging a career-best 23.9 points on top of 2.2 rebounds, a team-high 6.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 12 games. She missed three games earlier in the campaign due to an ankle injury. She agreed to a one-year deal worth $1 million in the offseason to stay with the Sparks. It was reported that she had no plan to re-sign for next year.
With the Mercury, Plum, who has not played since June 21, will join the veteran core of Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and DeWanna Bonner as they try to make a late surge and qualify for the playoffs.
Phoenix sent Monique Akoa Makani, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick to Los Angeles in exchange for Plum.
