Memorial Day 2026: Key business hours, stores, banking

Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25. Here’s what’s open and closed across mail delivery, banks, stock trading, schools, major retailers, and national restaurants—plus the holiday deals from Benihana, Firehouse Subs, and Krispy Kreme.
For many Americans. Memorial Day isn’t just a day on the calendar—it’s the moment the long push toward summer finally breaks open. By Monday, May 25, grills are being dusted off and cooler bags are getting packed. But the shopping question always comes first: what’s open when you need something today?.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors those who lost their lives while fighting for the United States. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday in May. And while the day carries deep remembrance, it also sets expectations for how everyday services—and commerce—will run.
Mail and package delivery shut down for most people. The United States Postal Service is closed on Memorial Day, with Priority Mail Express listed as the only exception. UPS locations will generally be closed too, with no pickup or delivery services. UPS Express Critical is the named exception.
FedEx follows a similar pattern: no delivery services and modified hours at physical locations. FedEx Custom Critical is the outlier, operating 365 days a year.
Banks and ATMs follow the holiday routine. Major bank branches—such as Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo—are not open on Memorial Day, but online banking remains available. ATMs outside of branches are also presented as a workable alternative.
Trading doesn’t happen at all. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq exchange are both closed, meaning there’s no buying or selling of stocks on the holiday.
Schools are largely shut as well, with the majority closed so students and teachers can have the day to reflect.
Pharmacies, though, are the practical lifeline for many households. Most major chains, including Walgreens and CVS, are open, with the advice to double-check the hours for your specific location since some businesses modify schedules.
For grocery runs and last-minute barbeque stocking, retail looks mixed but workable. Most grocery stores are open with modified hours, including Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Kroger, and Whole Foods. Costco is the exception on the retail big-box side—it will be closed. Target and Walmart are open. but the guidance is the same: confirm store hours before heading out so the trip doesn’t end in disappointment.
Food is where the holiday energy turns into savings. Most restaurants are open for the observance, and some are offering deals.
Benihana is offering a free entrée to veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, and first responders. To claim it, diners must dine in and show a military ID, veteran ID, or proof of employment. The offer runs from May 22 to May 25, and it requires purchasing an appetizer.
Firehouse Subs is running a buy-one, get-one-half-off sandwich deal at participating locations from May 22 to May 25.
Krispy Kreme is getting in on the holiday sweetness, too. Between May 22 and May 25. doughnut lovers can get a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for $2 with the purchase of any regular-price dozen or 16-count mini doughnuts. There’s a two-per-customer limit in person and a one-per-customer limit online. and shoppers are instructed to use the code BOGO2.
The common thread across the holiday is simple: services tied to nationwide infrastructure—mail. branch banking. stock trading—tend to close. while everyday essentials like pharmacies and many grocery stores keep moving. often with modified hours. Even so. Memorial Day can still trip up plans without a quick check of the specific location you’re counting on.

So UPS is closed but Priority Mail Express still works? Confusing lol
I swear every holiday is the same, like banks closed but my paycheck still somehow comes out. So if the banks are closed can I still use my debit card at a store or not? Nobody ever says that part.
Wait does this mean Memorial Day deals are already active on Sunday? My cousin said Krispy Kreme is open late like always but this article says “major” restaurants have holiday hours. I don’t know who to believe.
NY Stock Exchange closed… so that’s why my app “updates” weird on holidays. But if trading doesn’t happen at all then why do my stock prices still move in the afternoon? Seems like they’re lying or it’s just other markets or something. Also schools closed yet somehow my kid still got homework??
