Melania Trump Ends Pride Month With Sports Rules

On the final day of Pride Month, First Lady Melania Trump said she still supports the LGBTQIA+ community while backing restrictions on transgender rights, praising a Supreme Court ruling that allows states to ban transgender girls and women from female sports.
The last hours of Pride Month brought a message that didn’t fit neatly into celebration.
In an X post made on the very last day of Pride Month. First Lady Melania Trump insisted she can still be an LGBTQ ally while supporting restrictions on transgender rights. She pointed to Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling that allows states to ban transgender girls and women from competing in female sports. “America, we can support the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and also protect opportunities for female athletes,” Trump wrote. “Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair. Both ideals are essential.”.
For Trump, it was not a break from a position she has signaled before. In her 2024 memoir, she said she “fully supports the LGBTQIA+ community,” while also arguing that debates about transgender athletes were “deepening the divisions in our society.”
But outside of those statements, concrete examples of her advocacy have been difficult to find. Her political engagement has often been tied to her husband’s efforts to reach LGBTQ supporters. She has maintained a long-standing relationship with the Log Cabin Republicans. an organization that represents LGBTQ conservatives. and has been active in efforts tied to that outreach.
That connection now comes with new financial detail that complicates how the message lands. In 2024 financial disclosures, the Log Cabin Republicans paid Melania Trump $237,500 to speak at a fundraiser the organization hosted at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Supreme Court ruling she praised. paired with her insistence on “respect” and “fair” girls’ sports. sets up a clear through-line in how she frames the issue. Yet the timing—delivered at the close of Pride Month—and the contrast between broad ally language and limits on transgender participation leave many readers with the same unsettled question: how to reconcile her identity-based support with the specific restrictions she backs.
