An MBTA Orange Line shuttle bus driver meant to be transporting passengers to North Station instead drove them to Stoneham, about 10 miles from the Boston transit hub, on Thursday morning, transit officials said.

The passengers were eventually brought to North Station, the shuttle’s intended destination, after the mistake was discovered, according to the MBTA.

The incident occurred on the first day of the 11-day Orange Line suspension between the Oak Grove and Back Bay stations. Free and accessible shuttle buses are running between Oak Grove and North Station during the shutdown.

“The MBTA apologizes to these shuttle bus passengers for this inconvenience,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement. “The matter has been addressed with the shuttle bus vendor, and the driver of this shuttle is no longer working on this service.”

Transit officials did not specify how long the passengers were on the wrong route.
