Max Scherzer, Blue Jays look to build on playoff push vs. Rays

They’ll hope to continue that on Wednesday in Tampa as they take on the Rays at Tropicana Field, looking to win their seventh series in a row.

Max Scherzer will be on the mound for the Blue Jays, fresh off his last start on Aug. 13, when he worked five innings of one-run ball and became the 139th pitcher in MLB history to record 3,000 innings pitched.

Scherzer has been regaining his form since returning from the IL on July 27, owning a 2.20 ERA across three starts in August, with 12 hits, four earned runs and 13 punchouts in 16.1 innings this month.

Over 11 meetings, Scherzer is 6-3 against the Rays with a 2.41 ERA.

Throwing opposite Scherzer will be Drew Rasmussen, who’s put together back-to-back all-star seasons on the mound for the Rays.

Across 129.1 innings in 2026, Rasmussen has a 133 strikeouts, 23 walks and a 2.78 ERA, fifth lowest in the American League.

In his last 15 games, Rasmussen owns a 2.60 ERA with 90 strikeouts and 16 walks en route to a 9-4 record.

Since taking a hybrid approach at the trade deadline, the Blue Jays have made a push for a wild-card spot in a wide-open AL. Ahead of Wednesday’s game, the Blue Jays are tied with the Minnesota Twins at 0.5 games back of the Texas Rangers for the final AL wild-card spot.

The stakes are high, and you can watch all the coverage on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, starting at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT.
