For Mat Ryan, the hardest part wasn’t the moment his side’s World Cup run ended. It was the knowledge that, in the biggest minute of his life, he didn’t deliver.
Ryan, 34, has since apologised to Australia after the Socceroos were sent home in the first round of knockout matches following their penalty shootout against Egypt. His message carried a simple weight: he dreamt of taking his team through, and the outcome hurt.
The pressure around Ryan intensified after a late change made by coach Tony Popovic. with the breakout star Patrick Beach replaced by Ryan just moments before the shootout. The move drew criticism. and once the penalties began. Ryan came under fire for his role as Australia failed to find a way home.
“Dreamt of that moment my whole life,” Ryan said of the penalty shootout. “Never have wanted anything more than to have been able to produce and come through for the team and nation in a moment like that.”
Then the admission landed plainly. “Unfortunately I fell short and am sorry the dream has come to an end as a result.”
Ryan didn’t try to soften the reality of what came next. He acknowledged the pain, while insisting he will carry the lessons forward.
“Hurt is an understatement, but I’ll live with it and take the lessons and use them for whatever else life throws at me down the track,” he continued.
Australia’s campaign ended in the first round of knockout matches, the same stage as in 2022. Even so, Ryan pointed to something the squad did get right: the Socceroos were praised for once again emerging from the group stage at the tournament.
In his statement after the elimination, Ryan focused on gratitude as much as regret. “Incredibly proud of the team and my teammates for their performances throughout and once again captivating the nation and creating some memories we’ll all never forget,” he said.
He also thanked the staff who prepared the players. “To the staff for their commitment to providing the players with all they need to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities.”
And he saved a final note for the people who were watching, travelling, and gathering around live sites.
“Lastly. to the supporters who are always the ones who make the experiences as special as they are through the ways in which they go about supporting the team. ” Ryan wrote. “The atmospheres in the stadiums. the footage back home of the live sites and everything in between. making all the triumphant memories all the more special. thank you.
