PLAIN TWP. — GlenOak hopes to surprise Massillon in the Stark County rivals’ annual high school football meeting Friday night at Bob Commings Stadium.

The Golden Eagles have lost their last nine games against the Tigers since beating them in 2015, Nate Moore’s first season as the Massillon head coach.

Moore’s 12th season opened with a 31-18 home win over state power Glenville. This is the GlenOak home debut for new head coach Matt Dennison after a 36-21 loss at Dover. Please check below now at throughout the night for live updates.

Massillon-GlenOak game will be an hour shorter than Massillon-Glenville

The Glenville game was still going at 10 o’clock. This one figures to end around 9.

GlenOak ran a quick series and went for it on fourth down. Good field position led to a quick touchdown and a 44-7 Massillon lead.

Kickoff miscue times two … Massillon on a roll now

George Rivera’s recovery of a fumble on a kick return set up the Tigers at the GlenOak 12, just moments after a kickoff return miscue hurt the Eagles badly.

Savior Owens’ short touchdown run provided a 37-7 lead and a running clock.

Massillon got the ball at the GlenOak 6 to start the second half when GlenOak simply let a loose kickoff roll until somebody from the Tigers fell on it.

The Tigers couldn’t move and got a 25-yard field goal from Matteo Herrera. It was 31-7, positioning Massillon to make it a running-clock game.

GlenOak shows signs of becoming a dangerous team

Considering Massillon’s talent and Nate Moore’s experience and having the program in a good place, GlenOak has been pretty competitive in the first half, even though the Golden Eagles trail 28-7 as the Tiger Swing Band marches for a big crowd.

GlenOak has talent, including a player who has size and athleticism and has a chance to get better as the Federal League schedule approaches. He is 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end/defensive lineman Bradnce Saunders.

The Golden Eagles’ other Saunders, 6-1, 150-pound senior Caydren, looks to belong amidst Massillon’s array of athletes. His two pretty catches on a second-quarter series put GlenOak on the board, and his pass defense is part of a unit that has contained Massillon’s air game.

The halftime take on Massillon centers around the array of running backs. Everyone knows Michigan State commit Savior Owens and Oregon commit Brayton Feaster are a load. They showed it in the first half. But now the Tigers have unleashed sophomore Gary Yeager (5-11, 165), who got a couple early carries and late in the half popped one for 86 yards.

Massillon is exploring a lot of options as it takes a 28-7 lead to the end of the half.

It would be an opportunity to keep some wear and tear off Ohio State-bound receiver-defensive back Deontay Malone, but head coach Nate Moore wants to tun up Malone as a punt returner, and his return late in the half set up a touchdown threat.

Rasmus Haines toss to the left side of the end zone, though, was intercepted by GlenOak junior Timerien Patterson.

It was Haines’ first interception in two starts, and it allowed GlenOak to stay within 28-7 at halftime.

Here comes Massillon sophomore Yeager … and there he goes

It is now apparent why sophomore Gary Yeager suddenly is in the star-studded Massillon running back rotation.

After a penalty wiped out a 50-yard run by star senior Savior Owens, the give went to Yeager, who sped to the second level, juked a few GlenOak secondary men, and sped down the left sideline for a touchdown.

The 86-yard stunner leaves Massillon with a 28-7 lead.

Fourth-down gamble, Saunders catches, wake up GlenOak crowd

GlenOak faced a fourth and inches from its own 43, trailing 21-0. Quarterback Jamel Hall rammed into a stacked box for a first down.

Hall then went deep down the right side to one oif the Eagles top players, Caydren Saunders, for a 35-yard gain.

Hall then tested Massillon’s man coverage on Saunders, lofting a ball deep into the left side of the end zone. Saunders won a jump ball for a touchdown.

GlenOak’s student cheering section was yards from the play, behind the south end zone, and let out a huge roar. It’s 21-7, Massillon, with five minutes left in the first half.

Then, a holding call on Massillon wiped out a 50-yard run by Savior Owens.

Feister enters fray on offense, Massillon feasts

With the score at 14-0 after one quarter, 2025 Ohio Mr. Football finalist Brayton Feaster made his first carry, feeling and powering his way across the right side for 15 yards, on the second play of the second quarter. Then he carried again, pushing inside the red zone.

Feaster then powered up the middle and showed a long stride in getting inside the 5 and, as he was hit, diving into the end zone. The 14-yard touchdown left Massillon with a 21-0 lead.

Feister also is playing well at linebacker.

Sophomore ‘pinch-hits’ for Owens on Massillon scoring series

Massillon took over on its own 42 and surprised some people by inserting sophomore Gary Yeager at running back, and giving him a couple of carries..

A Rasmus Haines to Da’Shun Williams pass over the middle got the Tigers in the red zone. Williams is a 6-foot-6 senior new to Massillon after transferring from Euclid.

Owens was back on the field to score on a four-yard sweep. It appears the Tigers will be trying some things they had to keep on hold against Glenville.

It’s 14-0 with 1:34 left in the first quarter.

Massillon takes early lead at GlenOak

Massillon took over at the 20 after a kickoff touchback. Within three plays, the Tigers were close to midfield. A slant completion to Gio Jackson Jr. kept the sticks moving further.

Massillon was willing to live with short to medium gains by Savior Owens, as they established the run threat, and set up the passing game.

On a third and six, Owens plowed for the first down and soon scored from the 6.

It’s 7-0 Massillon with 6:29 left in the first quarter..

What seems sure to be the biggest crowd GlenOak will see this year began filing in at 5:30 and is settling in, in large numbers, as the teams warm up.

GlenOak officials expect the game to sell out, although tickets are being sold at the Bob Commings Stadium box office at this writing. Capacity, including standing room, is about 7,000.

Massillon’s loaded defense will be a big challenge for GlenOak’s sophomore quarterback, Jamel Hall, Massillon sports major-college players up front, at linebacker, and throughout the secondary.

The glue of the unit, not one of the major college prospects, probably is senior Isaac Maxheimer (6-1, 225), who plays a linebacker spot the Tigers call “Obie.”

GlenOak has very good threats in the receiving game, but between Massillon’s rush and coverage, the Eagles have their hands full tonight.

The sun is beating down, making it seem hot even with the temperature at a moderate 77. It seems cool in the shaded parts of the stadium, and will actually be cool after the sun after the sun sets at 8:04, and the temperature dips to the 60s for the second half.

New GlenOak Matt Dennison on sideline, assessing Massillon

As the crowd streams in, new GlenOak head coach Matt Dennison stood on the south goal line at Bob Commings Stadium and assessed where things stand for his team.

The offense moved the ball up and down the field at Dover, Dennison said, but mistakes kept the Golden Eagles from scoring more than 21 points.

Dennison understands that the Eagles are heavy unmderdogs against Massillon, which he called “the most talented team in Ohio.” Objectively, it is hard to imagine a more talented one, although the Tigers are not deep on the lines, and even start a freshman, James Gatsios, up front.

“This game is about us, working on us, doing what we can to get better,” Dennison said.

The Golden Eagles will be in a better position to win next Saturday when they face Cleveland Heights at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Up next for Massillon is a game against an NFL Academy team of talented football prospects from around Europe.

The crowd is unlikely to fit in 6,000-seat Bob Commings Stadium, named after one of the more popular figures in Massillon football history, who left Massillon for the Big Ten (Iowa) and finished his career at GlenOak.

“A huge shoutout to our fans, who were tremendous in the Glenville game,” Moore said. “It’s always good Week1, but the crowd took it to another level. It was 15,000-plus, and they weren’t sitting on their hands.”

GlenOak has struggled in recent years, but the Golden Eagles have drawn many strong home crowds, especially against McKinley and other top Federal League opponents.
