Mason Thames is stepping into the John Wick world—and right now, the studio-style mystery is the loudest part.

The 18-year-old actor has been announced to join the cast of Lionsgate’s upcoming franchise movie Caine. Lionsgate has confirmed the news, with details on Thames’ role being kept under wraps for the moment.

Caine is being positioned as “an Hong Kong-style action thriller much like those that made Yen famous.” The latest screenplay comes from Mattson Tomlin, who is tied to The Batman Part II.

The movie’s core momentum is already set by familiar faces. Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4, and he’ll also direct and executive produce. Yen is described as bringing his “signature approach to action filmmaking. blending precision choreography with emotional storytelling.” Rina Sawayama is also returning as the fearless daughter of Shimazu Koji. a character played by Hiroyuki Sanada in Chapter 4.

Production is currently underway on Caine, continuing the story after Caine has been freed from his obligations to The High Table.

The timing feels especially swift for Thames. His casting comes just after he wrapped filming on the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 a few weeks ago. That film is set to debut in theaters in June 2027.

Thames also has a lineup beyond the John Wick universe: he’s set to star in the Green Day inspired movie Nimrods with Mckenna Grace, and he’s also attached to Idiots with Dave Franco.

For now, the biggest question is simple and specific—who, exactly, will Thames play in Caine? Until that answer surfaces, the rest of the project is moving ahead with a clear action-thriller promise and a returning cast built for high-impact scenes.

  1. Hearing “Hong Kong-style action thriller” and Donnie Yen already makes me think it’ll be great, but Mason Thames role is literally a mystery. Like how are we supposed to be excited if we don’t know who he is.

  2. Isn’t this the kid from How to Train Your Dragon? They’re rushing him into John Wick already, like 18 is basically veteran status now. Also wasn’t the High Table stuff supposed to end in chapter 4? Idk I’m confused but I’ll watch.

  3. They keep saying the studio mystery is “the loudest part” which is funny cause I’m like… the loudest part is I don’t trust Lionsgate with anything franchise-y anymore. Donnie Yen directing again is cool though, but if Mason Thames is just gonna be some random guy, then what’s the point. Also Mattson Tomlin from Batman Part II like… does that mean it’ll be dark like Batman or is it still John Wick rules? No clue.
