Marte rests as D-backs edge Rockies in opener finale

Marte gets – Ketel Marte took a pre-planned day off Sunday after Arizona’s 8-6 win at Colorado. Manager Torey Lovullo said there’s “nothing to read into it,” pointing to Marte’s readiness to come off the bench and a recent pattern of getting into his groove.

DENVER — Ketel Marte didn’t even try to hide it on Sunday: a routine day off, the kind that looks ordinary until you remember how quickly any absence can turn into worry.

Arizona still found its footing at Colorado. beating the Rockies 8-6. and manager Torey Lovullo moved fast to calm any speculation about Marte’s status. “There’s nothing to read into it,” Lovullo said, confirming it was a pre-planned off-day for the veteran. “It’s very programmed when we come up here, especially for Ketel, that he’s going to get a day off. When we were talking about it. he said. ‘I will absolutely be ready to come off the bench to help us win a game on Sunday.’ So that’s definitely in play for us.”.

Lovullo also tied the rest to what he’s been seeing from Marte on the field. Marte, 32, went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Colorado. The manager said he’s noticed signs that the leadoff hitter is starting to find his rhythm after hitting .209 (34-for-163) in his first 41 games.

“Ketel’s been really consistent all year. and I know I go back to the expected numbers. and it isn’t a game of expected numbers. it’s a game of results. ” Lovullo said. “But when that’s all we can lean on. when we’re seeing trends and habits. I know that Ketel is going to come out of this. If he continues to strike the ball the way he is. it’s going to start to fall for him for sure.”.

With Marte sitting, Ildermaro Vargas stepped into the leadoff spot and played second. Vargas finished 1-for-5 with an RBI single. The production mattered in the bigger picture, too: Vargas was 5-for-14 in the series, including three singles and a double in Friday’s opener.

The day off wasn’t framed as a detour. It was mapped out, placed inside a plan Lovullo said Marte agreed to — with the expectation that he’d be ready to help from the bench on Sunday, in a finale Arizona needed to get right.

  1. So Marte took a day off and they still won?? Sounds like the Rockies are just bad at baseball lol.

  2. Idk why people are worried, managers always say “nothing to read into it” and then somehow it turns into an injury. I watched like half the game though.

  3. Wait I thought Marte was the one who got hit or something last week? Also they said day off was pre-planned but the wording in the article is confusing. Either way, Vargas leading off feels like a cover-up for something.

  4. “Programmed” day off sounds like they just manage everything for him… then they’re like he’s gonna be ready off the bench. But he’s batting .209 right now so when does it actually “fall for him”?
