It doesn’t come with the luxury perks you’ll find on premium Marriott cards, but it still offers meaningful value thanks to a yearly free night award (certain hotels have resort fees), automatic elite status and bonus earning on common business expenses.
I’ve always found that the best credit cards — hotel cobranded cards included — work best when the benefits align naturally with how you travel. For business owners who regularly book Marriott stays, whether for conferences, client meetings or quick overnight trips, this card offers a mix of perks that can make those stays more rewarding.

Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card: The basics
The is Marriott’s primary cobranded credit card designed for small-business owners who frequently stay at Marriott properties. The card earns Marriott Bonvoy points on purchases and offers several hotel-focused perks that can enhance stays at hotels in the brand’s portfolio.
The card carries a $125 annual fee and earns elevated rewards on purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program, along with bonus points on several common business expenses.
Cardholders also receive automatic Marriott Gold Elite status and 15 elite night credits each calendar year, which can accelerate progress toward higher levels of Marriott Bonvoy status.
These elite night credits can stack with the credits earned from a personal Marriott credit card.
Another standout perk is the annual free night award worth up to 35,000 points (certain hotels have resort fees). If used strategically — particularly at properties with high cash rates — this single benefit can easily offset the card’s annual fee.
While Marriott Bonvoy points can be transferred to more than 35 airline partners, this card is most rewarding for travelers who plan to redeem points for Marriott stays.
Another strong benefit of this card is that, as an American Express small-business card, it won’t add to your Chase 5/24 count, meaning opening it shouldn’t affect your ability to apply for Chase cards down the road.

While the doesn’t come with luxury-level perks, I think the value here really comes down to a few core benefits that work well together — especially if you already stay with Marriott regularly. Enrollment is required for select benefits.
Annual free night award
The benefit I personally see as the easiest way to justify this card is the annual free night award worth up to 35,000 points that you receive each year after your account anniversary (certain hotels have resort fees).
In practice, the best way to maximize this certificate is by using it on nights when cash rates are unusually high. If a Marriott property costs $300 or more for a standard room but falls within the 35,000-point redemption range, that single redemption easily outweighs the card’s $125 annual fee.
You can also top off the certificate with up to 25,000 points from your Bonvoy account (previously 15,000), which significantly expands the range of hotels where it can be used.
There’s also an opportunity to earn a second free night award (up to 35,000 points) after spending $60,000 on purchases in a calendar year, though that spending requirement will likely be out of reach for many small businesses.
Automatic Marriott Gold Elite status
Another standout perk of the Marriott Bonvoy Business is automatic Marriott Gold Elite status, which includes 25% bonus points on paid stays, late checkout, premium internet and room upgrades (based on availability at check-in).
Gold Elite status isn’t the most valuable tier in the program, but, in my experience, it can still improve your overall hotel experience, especially when occasional upgrades or late checkout can make a stay more comfortable.
Elite night credits boost
Cardholders also receive 15 elite night credits toward the next level of elite status.
These credits are particularly useful because they stack with elite night credits from personal Marriott credit cards, meaning you could start the year with 30 nights already credited toward status.
Since Platinum Elite status requires 50 nights annually, this perk alone gets you more than halfway there. For frequent Marriott travelers, I see this shortcut toward higher status as one of the card’s most underrated benefits.
Additional perks
Other benefits include access to Amex Offers and no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees).
Plus, you can enjoy an automatic 7% discount on standard room rates when you book an eligible room directly through Marriott at participating properties under the “Amex Business Card Rate.”
How to earn and use your rewards
When you use the , you’ll earn Marriott Bonvoy points that can be redeemed across the brand’s hotel portfolio or transferred to travel partners.
Earning points
This card offers 6 points per dollar spent on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.
You also receive 4 points per dollar spent on:
- Restaurant purchases worldwide
- Purchases made at U.S. gas stations
- Wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers
- Purchases made from merchants in the U.S. for shipping
You’ll earn 2 Bonvoy points per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases.
If you stay at Marriott properties regularly, the earning potential becomes interesting when you combine the card’s rewards with the points you earn through the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.
Marriott members earn 10 base points per dollar spent on hotel stays, and with the card’s automatic Gold Elite status, you’ll receive a 25% bonus, bringing the total to 12.5 points per dollar spent from Marriott stays alone.
When you add the 6 points per dollar from the credit card, you could earn a total of 18.5 Marriott points per dollar spent on eligible Marriott stays.
Based on TPG’s September 2026 valuation of 0.75 cents per Marriott point, that’s a return of nearly 14% on Marriott stays, which is a strong return for a cobranded hotel credit card.
Outside of Marriott purchases, the card’s four-point categories offer strong earning rates across several common spending areas. These categories make it easier to earn Marriott points even when you’re not staying at a Marriott property.
Even if you only stay at Marriott hotels occasionally, these bonus categories can still help the card generate meaningful rewards on everyday spending. Still, we generally advise putting nonhotel spending on a general travel rewards card instead.
Redeeming points
The most valuable way to redeem Marriott points is typically for award stays at Marriott properties.
Marriott Bonvoy uses dynamic award pricing, meaning the number of points required for a hotel night can vary depending on demand and season.
One way to maximize value is to book stays in five-night increments, which unlocks Marriott’s “Stay for 5, Pay for 4” benefit. The fifth-night-free benefit is an easy way to get up to a 20% discount on your redemption and stretch your points further.
TPG lead writer Katie Genter recently used a free night award for a stay at the Marriott Mena House, Cairo, which would otherwise have cost $419, highlighting the potential value of these certificates when used strategically.
While Marriott points can also be transferred to airline partners, the typical 3:1 transfer ratio isn’t very competitive when compared to flexible currencies like American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards. For that reason, redeeming points for hotel stays will usually provide better value.
Potential drawbacks to the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card
Although the offers strong value for Marriott loyalists, it won’t be the best option for every small-business owner.
First, the card’s rewards are heavily tied to the Marriott ecosystem, meaning travelers who don’t frequently stay at Marriott properties may struggle to maximize its value. Those looking for flexible rewards that can be transferred to a wide range of airline and hotel partners may prefer a general travel rewards card.
Another drawback is the weak airline transfer ratio. Because Marriott Bonvoy points typically transfer to airline partners at a 3:1 ratio, you’ll lose significant value versus earning transferable points through a credit card program.
Finally, while the card includes a valuable free night award, earning the second free night award requires $60,000 in annual spending, which may be out of reach for many small businesses.
When to apply for the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card
For a limited time, new applicants can earn 100,000 bonus points plus one free night award (valued at up to 50,000 points) after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. Offer ends Nov. 4. (Certain hotels have resort fees.)
TPG’s valuations peg Marriott points at 0.75 cents apiece, making this offer worth up to $1,125 (when the free night award is fully maximized for its 50,000-point value).
This tops the typical offer we see on this card, but hold tight if you can. The sweet spot is over 150,000 points — either as four free night awards (up to 200,000 points total) or 150,000 points plus a statement credit.
Before applying, note that Marriott and American Express have strict application rules that may affect your eligibility for a welcome bonus, especially if you’ve previously held certain Marriott or former Starwood Preferred Guest credit cards.
Other cards to consider if you don’t want the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card
While this is Marriott’s only small-business card available to new applicants, there are personal Marriott Bonvoy cards that offer similar (or better) perks.
