Markwayne Mullin Grips Stress Ball During DeLauro Clash

In a tense Thursday House Appropriations Committee hearing, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin repeatedly squeezed a stress ball as he sparred with Rep. Rosa DeLauro over Department of Transportation funding and labor protections for TSA workers. The argument esca

When Markwayne Mullin testified before the House Appropriations Committee on Thursday, he didn’t just bring prepared remarks on DHS oversight. He brought a stress ball, and he kept squeezing it—again and again—as the confrontation with Rep. Rosa DeLauro sharpened.

The clash turned unmistakably personal. DeLauro pointed her finger at the secretary and snapped, “Don’t interrupt me!” Mullin fired back, clapping as he pointed his own finger at her while holding the stress ball: “Don’t you point your finger at me,” he said, adding, “Don’t be a hypocrite.”

DeLauro pressed on the substance of the hearing, grilling Mullin about funding for the Department of Transportation. Her line of questioning centered on the Transportation Security Administration and the labor protections TSA workers should receive.

“Given all that the Transportation Security [Administration] did for us during a Republican shutdown, how can it be that the Department’s position is that TSA workers should not be granted the same basic labor protections as federal enforcement officers?” DeLauro asked.

Mullin seized on DeLauro’s phrase “Republican shutdown.”

“Well, actually, it was the Democrats that voted every time to shut them down,” Mullin said. “Republicans voted every time to open them up. We didn’t shut them down, you shut them down.”

“Answer my question!” DeLauro demanded.

“I did,” Mullin replied, stress ball in hand.

The tension spiked further as he spoke over her. telling the chairman of the committee that DeLauro had the floor despite Mullin’s protestations. He continued without taking a breathe, saying, “I’m factually correct!. You voted to shut them down. Republicans voted to open them over, and over and over again—”.

By the time the chairman tried to rein in the exchange, the hearing had shifted from policy debate to raw power struggle—one that quickly spilled well beyond the chamber.

On social media, the stress ball became its own symbol. Journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X. “Even the Republican committee chair is losing patience with Markwayne Mullin. who is gripping a stress ball as he clearly struggles to control his temper.” Another social media user suggested Mullin would need a bigger stress ball to handle the standoffs.

The hearing—watchable via CSPAN—left viewers focused on the same moment: a senior Department of Homeland Security official squeezing a stress ball while arguing with DeLauro over TSA labor protections and the politics of government shutdowns.
