Mariners 7, Brewers 2: Dustin May pitches poorly out of the gates

Jake Bauers was all over the Brewers’ 22-0 win over the Mariners
Jake Bauers scored the game’s first run on a crazy play at the plate, then joined the hit parade later with his 22nd homer in a 22-0 win.
The Milwaukee Brewers continue a three-game home series as they take on the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 19 at American Family Field.
Follow along for live updates as Dustin May (6-7, 4.13) opposes Logan Gilbert (9-7, 3.28) in the starting pitching matchup.
Joey Ortiz makes it 7-2
The Brewers ensured it would not be a 22-0 game for the second straight night when Joey Ortiz turned on a 1-0 fastball from Logan Gilbert and sent it 391 feet to left for a two-run homer. With his seventh long ball of the year, Ortiz improved to 32 for his last 93 (.344) with five homers and 16 RBIs.
More struggles in second inning for May
May wasn’t getting hit hard, but his inability to generate any swing-and-miss kept popping up as the Mariners tallied three more runs to make it 7-0 in the second.
The right-hander threw another x pitches in another laboring inning, this one featuring more tough luck to go along with poor execution of pitches.
May’s first whiff of the game came on pitch number 61 of the outing, by which point Seattle had already placed 10 men on base against him. Brendan Donovan led it off with his second infield hit, May hit Randy Arozarena in a two-strike count and Dominic Canzone blooped a single to left to load the bases.
A sacrifice fly and two-run single by Josh Naylor at 85. 2 mph put May drove all three runs in to make it 7-0.
He eventually struck out Cal Raleigh with two whiffs to mercifully end the second rally.
William Contreras has been poor on ABS challenges
The Brewers will play the rest of this game without any ABS challenges after William Contreras burned both on balls outside the zone in the top of the first. That’s by far the earliest they have been without a challenge all year.
Contreras is now 7 for his last 21 on ABS challenges on defense.
Dustin May gets hit in the first inning
Dustin May’s worst inning as a Brewer came in the first Aug. 19 as the Mariners tacked on three straight hits to open the game.
Brendan Donovan reached on an infield single as Brice Turang’s spinning throw on a wide-ranging play was well wide of first, Randy Arozarena followed with a bloop to center and Dominic Canzone crushed a two-strike sinker to left for a two-run double.
It got worse.
After retiring the next two batters, May walked Cole Young and the .157-hitting Cal Raleigh after getting to two strikes on both. He got to two strikes to the next hitter, Taylor Ward, but again couldn’t put him away, allowing a two-run single to right.
May threw 36 pitches and got no swings and misses.
