Marcia Lucas dies at 80 after metastatic cancer battle

Marcia Lucas, the acclaimed editor credited as an early “secret weapon” behind Star Wars and an Academy Award winner for Best Film Editing, has died at 80 after metastatic cancer, her family said.
Marcia Lucas spent decades shaping stories that millions still feel in their bones—then, on Wednesday, metastatic cancer quietly ended her run at home.
George Lucas’s ex-wife and longtime creative force behind the original Star Wars films died on Wednesday, according to a family representative, passing peacefully at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, surrounded by loved ones.
Her name may not have been on every marquee, but her work helped define the rhythm of a franchise that changed Hollywood. Marcia Lucas is best known for editing Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, and for winning an Academy Award in 1977 for Best Film Editing for the original film.
She began her editing career in the mid-1960s. securing an apprenticeship during which she edited multiple promotional trailers and commercials. During work on the documentary Journey to the Pacific. she connected with Verna Fields—who later went on to edit Jaws—and the two paths soon overlapped with George Lucas. Marcia met George while working on the documentary, and they got engaged shortly after.
In 1969, Marcia and George Lucas tied the knot. Their collaborations followed quickly: she edited George’s short film Filmmaker and his feature-length directorial debut THX 1138. They also co-edited American Graffiti with Fields.
Before the Star Wars era fully arrived, she worked with Martin Scorsese on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Taxi Driver. But her role in the Star Wars editing process became especially important, after George was horrified by the first rough cut of the movie.
Marcia, Richard Chew, and Paul Hirsch won the Oscar for Best Film Editing at the 50th annual Academy Awards in 1977. She later served as an editor of Return of the Jedi. Even after their marriage. she remained close to the creative process; during their time together. she also gave George notes on other projects during their marriage in an unofficial capacity.
In 1983, Marcia and George’s marriage ended. She married Tom Rodrigues, a stained glass artist, later that year, and they divorced in 1993.
In the years that followed, Marcia looked back with complicated honesty. She once expressed regret about the end of her 20 “wonderful years” with George, telling Return of the Jedi actor Michael Pennington that she didn’t think George had forgiven her for the split.
Even in later life, she didn’t stay quiet about the franchise she helped build. In recent years, she was vocal about the Star Wars universe, bashing Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams for the direction of the sequel series and saying they just “don’t get” the franchise.
Marcia Lucas had two daughters—Amanda Lucas with George and Amy Soper with Tom. She was 80.

Oh wow I didn’t know she had cancer. That’s sad.
So she won the Oscar in like 1977? That’s insane. Star Wars wouldn’t hit the same without the editing, I guess.
Wait, wasn’t she the one who wrote the scripts or something? Like George wouldn’t have made Star Wars without her ideas. Either way, RIP.
Metastatic cancer, at home, surrounded by loved ones… heartbreaking. I always thought the “secret weapon” thing was PR fluff but apparently she really shaped the rhythm?? Also I’m confused how she’s George Lucas’s ex-wife but she’s still credited like a key force the whole time. Anyway, condolences.
