Marblehead football senior captain, star three-sport athlete dies

A Marblehead High School football captain has died.
The school announced Friday morning that Owen Coyne, a senior and three-sport athlete for the school, had passed away. The team’s matchup against Danvers, which was originally slated for Friday night, has been officially cancelled.
Coyne’s parents and siblings released a statement that was sent out to the Marblehead community.
“It is with broken hearts and unimaginable sadness that we share that our beloved Owen has passed away,” the family said in the statement, per the Marblehead Current. “There are simply no words for the loss of a child, a brother, a captain, a teammate, a friend, and a young man who is so deeply loved by so many. Owen brought so much joy, laughter and light into the lives of those who knew him, and the impact he made will remain with us forever.”
The statement also included a comment from Marblehead superintendent Josh Robidoux, who reflected on the “difficult time” for the community.
“This is a sad day for our Marblehead community, and we ask that you send positive thoughts and prayers to the Coyne family and Owen’s friends during this difficult time,” the statement reads, via the Marblehead Current. “In the days and weeks to come, we will be providing counseling support in an ongoing way during the school day for students and staff who want to avail themselves of the opportunity. We will share further information with the community as appropriate.”
In addition to playing football, Coyne was a member of the Magicians’ indoor track and field and was a Northeastern Conference All-Star in baseball last spring. He committed to continue his football career at Williams College in July.
The school is providing counselors to students and community members on Friday and Saturday.
