Maple Leafs lock Bobrovsky in $7M AAV gamble

Sergei Bobrovsky has been signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs to a three-year, $7 million AAV contract. The move comes after a down season with the Florida Panthers, but also follows a career rich in Vezina wins and deep playoff success—setting up a high-stakes

The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t wait for the offseason to talk their way into a turnaround—they moved quickly to secure a goalie they believe can stabilize what went wrong.

Toronto has signed Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year, $7 million AAV contract. The details came through league sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reflecting the negotiations that aren’t public.

Bobrovsky is 38 and will turn 38 in September. The concern is obvious: he is coming off a down season with the Florida Panthers, a team that was decimated by injuries. His production included career-worst numbers in save percentage (.877) and goals saved above expected (-17.6).

But Toronto is not only buying the most recent version of Bobrovsky. A year earlier, he anchored the Panthers to three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances, with two wins. He’s also one of the most decorated goalies of his generation.

His résumé doesn’t stop at awards. Bobrovsky won two Vezina Trophies, with Columbus in 2013 and 2017. He leads all active goalies with 456 career wins.

The playoff record is where his new team will look for reassurance. Since 2023, he has 44 wins—more than any other goalie in the NHL, and 12 more than the next-closest. His save percentage in the postseason is .912, and over that stretch he has a league-best 26.14 goals saved above expected. His 61 career playoff wins rank second among active goalies and 16th all-time.

Toronto’s bet is straightforward. even if the outcome isn’t: the Leafs are desperate to turn things around next season. and they’re aiming to keep captain Auston Matthews around while they do it. With Bobrovsky. they’re taking a goalie with a deep track record of doing the job in the playoffs. and they believe experience can carry them back.

It’s also why the risk can’t be ignored. Bobrovsky’s worst season of his NHL career is still recent. He’ll be one of the oldest goalies in the league next season, and Toronto will likely count on him to play 50-plus games, plus potentially more if the playoffs arrive.

The contract only works if he bounces back to form and provides value on the deal—an assumption the Leafs have to make after a season that didn’t match his usual impact, even if the Panthers’ injury problems explain part of the context.

For the Maple Leafs, this isn’t a small tweak. It’s a decision meant to reshape the next stretch of their season, and it leaves only one way for the move to feel fully right: performance that puts them back in the playoffs.
