Maple Leafs forward Max Domi’s surgery stalls 2026-27

Max Domi’s offseason surgery has come with complications, putting the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2026-27 season start in jeopardy. The forward will be out indefinitely as the team re-evaluates him at the start of training camp, with other Leafs priorities—new leader

For the Toronto Maple Leafs, the off-season was supposed to be about reset and momentum. Instead, the team’s next chapter is being tested by an unexpected health setback.

Max Domi. a forward who just finished the second year of a four-year contract extension. is now facing an indefinite absence after offseason surgery complications. The Maple Leafs shared the update in a release posted to X. explaining that the procedure was meant to address an issue Domi had played through during the 2025-26 season.

The statement from the club was blunt on the timing: “Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely. Domi will continue working with the club’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp. ” it read.

That makes training camp the next checkpoint for Toronto, and it comes with a real cost to how the early phase of 2026-27 will be built. Domi’s status was not treated as week-to-week, and no other specifics were provided on the type of injury or what he had surgery on.

At 31, Domi is coming off a season that, on the surface, did not look like a major injury story. He played in 80 games and finished with 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points—marking the most goals he has scored as a member of the Maple Leafs. He also recorded the most powerplay points in his time with the franchise and saw the most ice time during his tenure in Toronto.

In other words, this isn’t coming after a campaign filled with visible limits. The concern is that what he was able to power through in 2025-26 may have been tied to an underlying problem that ultimately required surgery—and the recovery is now complicated.

Domi’s situation lands as the Maple Leafs prepare for major organizational change. Toronto is set to begin 2026-27 with a new general manager and with Craig Berube fired as head coach. The team also holds the top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Alongside those shifts. rumors have swirled about the future of Auston Matthews. adding another layer of uncertainty to what comes next.

Within that unsettled backdrop, Toronto’s immediate focus will be improving the roster ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. The club can’t fully plan around Domi’s timeline beyond the fact that he will continue working with the team’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.

For now, the Leafs have to balance a roster-building season with a question mark that isn’t about a contract or a draft slot—it’s about whether one of their more productive, consistent forwards can return when the new era is supposed to get rolling.

  1. So he’s out indefinitely… that’s like forever in sports time. Leafs are cursed lol.

  2. I didn’t even realize Domi had surgery, played through something last year and now complications. Honestly with no details it feels like they’re hiding what it really is.

  3. Wait reply’s confused—was it shoulder or like teeth? I saw “issue he played through” and assumed it was concussion related or something. Either way they said start of training camp like that fixes it automatically?

  4. Indefinitely is crazy. I get it’s complications but the article barely says anything. Also “new leader” reset momentum like ok cool but when you’re missing your forward for half the year that’s not a reset, that’s just bad luck. Hope he’s alright though.
