Mandalorian Spin-Off’s Huge Update Arrives Five Years On
Maul — – Five years after the first season of The Mandalorian launched alongside Disney+, Star Wars fans are getting a major continuation: a Maul-focused project lands a Season 2 pickup after earning a near-perfect critics score, while The Mandalorian and Grogu head to
For Star Wars fans, the calendar is packed in a way that feels almost unfair—more projects are arriving than anyone asked for, but fewer are being ignored.
The first Star Wars release of the year, Maul — Shadow Lord, has now moved into its next chapter. After debuting with a near-perfect 99% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the show was picked up for Season 2.
And at the same time, the franchise is about to pull familiar faces off the small screen and into theaters. Fans are heading to the big screen for the first time since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker to watch a new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film is a direct continuation of the first three seasons of The Mandalorian. which premiered in 2018 alongside the launch of Disney’s premiere streaming platform.
Those first three seasons didn’t just expand the story—they pulled in some of Star Wars’ most recognizable names. Luke Skywalker appears, played by Mark Hamill. Ahsoka appears, played by Rosario Dawson. Boba Fett also shows up, voiced/portrayed by Temuera Morrison.
But Boba Fett’s presence comes with a lingering question hanging over the MandoVerse.
Not long after the second season of The Mandalorian. Star Wars released a full spin-off show. The Book of Boba Fett. The reception was divisive. That divisiveness wasn’t blamed on Boba Fett himself. but the show wasn’t picked up for Season 2. and Boba Fett hasn’t been seen since the finale—despite the continued expansion of the MandoVerse.
Later this year, though, his story is set to continue in a different format. Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett story will continue later this year with a new Marvel sequel comic. The new comic’s premise places the new crime lord of Tatooine continuing to rule the planet with justice and fairness. Fennec Shand—played by Ming Na Wen—will also be featured in the new comic book.
The comic has a clear release date: The Book of Boba Fett Issue #1 will be released on September 9 in comic book shops around the world. Rodney Barnes and Will Sliney—known for work on other Star Wars titles including Han Solo: Hunt for the Falcon. Ahsoka. and Rise of Kylo Ren—are writing the new issue. There’s also the possibility Marvel could tell more Book of Boba Fett stories if the comic sells well. which puts the next chapter directly in fans’ hands.
The Mandalorian-era universe is moving forward on multiple fronts—new seasons, a theater-bound continuation, and a comic book return for a character who’s been off-screen since the finale of The Book of Boba Fett.
