Man Utd weigh Fulham’s Berge as midfield bargain

A fresh midfield target has surfaced for Manchester United, and it’s the sort of name that can make supporters look twice.
United are in the market for two new central midfield signings this summer. Ederson is described as the first man through the door. in a £38million move from Atalanta. though it is still not confirmed. For the second spot. the club has been linked with a wide range of players—yet one of the most closely discussed options is Sander Berge. currently at Fulham.
Berge’s potential transfer would land far lower than some of the other names in the conversation. United could make a move for the 28-year-old as a comparatively cheaper alternative, with the price being framed at about £25million.
The question for United supporters is whether that’s truly what the club is after—experience, role fit, and Premier League readiness, rather than headline spending.
Berge was near ever-present for Fulham last season, starting 34 of the club’s 38 Premier League matches. His impact wasn’t limited to club football. He was called up to Norway’s squad for the 2026 World Cup. with Norway’s first game taking place against Iraq on Tuesday night. That call-up came alongside a growing sense that he has the kind of grounding United often wants in the middle: a player comfortable in the pace and pressure of the Premier League.
United have been connected with Berge in the past. In 2024, they considered a move when the midfielder left Burnley to sign for Fulham. There were also rumours back in January 2020 that Berge—then 20—could join Manchester United directly from Burnley in the Premier League transfer window.
This time, Fulham’s own stance may be the deciding factor on cost. The Athletic has framed it as a situation where United are “running the rule. ” while Fulham would likely “want to make a profit on the £25million they paid two years ago.” That’s a key complication for a club looking for a bargain: Berge’s figure could rise quickly depending on how strongly Fulham press their pricing.
Even if the transfer talk looks like it’s gaining momentum. United’s interest isn’t new to the Fulham dressing room. Vincent Kompany has been a big fan of the Fulham star. and both Kompany and Albert Stuivenberg—Fulham’s coach of Berge at Genk and now an Arsenal assistant manager—have described Berge as an “intelligent” footballer. That intelligence is tied to a very specific fit for United: Berge would be expected to fulfil one clear role. being firmly a No.6.
Berge’s Premier League route also explains why he’s seen as a viable solution. He arrived at Sheffield United after previously leaving Burnley and later moved to Fulham. spending three-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane before that change. Now, at Craven Cottage, his contract situation leaves Fulham in control. He has a deal at Fulham until 2029. and Fulham hold a one-year option to extend it—up to 2030—meaning they have leverage over any negotiations over a transfer fee for the Norwegian.
Manchester United’s pursuit has also been shaped by earlier near-misses. There was even a moment at United’s Carrington training ground when a mystery player arrived with rumours circulating that it was the Genk star. Berge was falsely claimed to be undergoing a medical ahead of a £20million move to help bolster United’s midfield options. but it was not the case. The midfielder ultimately didn’t make the switch then—signing for Sheffield United instead.
For now, the talk around Berge sits inside a larger midfield reshuffle that United still need to complete. With United linked to plenty of other names for their second central midfield signing—and with West Ham still demanding £80million despite relegation to the Championship—Berge stands out as a clear alternative on price.
Whether that becomes a real deal will likely depend on one thing: Fulham’s willingness to sell. and how strongly they push for a profit on what they paid. If United are serious about a more affordable option. Berge’s contract and Fulham’s position ensure it won’t be simple. But if United can land a Premier League-tested No.6 who started 34 of 38 league games last season—and has already earned another international call for Norway’s World Cup run—then the “bargain” angle may start sounding less surprising.
