Man United forced to reassess Ugarte amid knee scare

Manchester United have confirmed Manuel Ugarte suffered knee ligament damage during Uruguay’s World Cup defeat to Spain, with the extent and recovery timeline still being assessed. The injury threatens to disrupt United’s summer midfield rebuild and complicate

Manchester United’s summer planning took a sharp turn in Guadalajara after Manuel Ugarte left the pitch in tears, stretchered off following a knee twist during Uruguay’s World Cup defeat to Spain.

United have now confirmed that the 25-year-old midfielder suffered a knee ligament injury in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain. The club say the specific ligaments affected are not yet known, with assessment ongoing to determine the best treatment and rehabilitation timeline.

“Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain.

Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way,” the statement read.

For all the uncertainty around what happens next, the immediate concern is straightforward: Ugarte’s wellbeing. But United also face a difficult ripple effect as they navigate their transfer window.

The injury could impact how aggressively United push their midfield rebuild, particularly their pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Manchester United have been in talks with the London club over Fernandes, who is rated at £80million. The structure of United’s summer plans has left them weighing whether any potential fee for Ugarte would be available to help fund new additions.

United’s willingness to listen to offers for Ugarte was already established. It is widely understood that they would entertain sales. even though he has struggled to hold down a regular place since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain. That move was worth up to £50.5million two years ago. Last season, he made just 10 starts in all competitions.

Tactical preference has also shaped his playing time. Ruben Amorim favoured a midfield pivot of Bruno Fernandes alongside Casemiro, and when that plan shifted, Michael Carrick then recalled Kobbie Mainoo to partner Casemiro.

United have already moved to rebuild after Casemiro left Old Trafford as a free agent. They have agreed a £39million deal with Atalanta to sign Ederson after he returns from the World Cup with Brazil, and they remain locked in discussions with West Ham for Fernandes.

West Ham, though, value Fernandes between £80-85million. Tottenham are also in negotiations with the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, meaning United are not operating in a vacuum. United would have to persuade West Ham to sell, though Fernandes’ personal terms are not thought to be a problem.

If United fail to land Fernandes, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is believed to be among the alternatives on a list that includes Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.

Whether Ugarte’s injury becomes a transfer obstacle depends on how long the midfielder might be sidelined. The extent of the knee problem remains unknown, but the possibility of lengthy rehabilitation has already cast doubt over the likelihood of him being sold this summer.

United’s situation is a balancing act. Even if Ugarte’s injury reduces their chances of a sale. it is unlikely to affect United’s ability to pay for both Ederson and Fernandes. The bigger question is whether there is room in their budget to add a third midfielder—something United had hoped to do. if they could recoup money from Ugarte.

Now, United may also have to adjust priorities elsewhere. The club were considering bringing in a left-sided player and also adding a back-up goalkeeper. If Ugarte cannot be moved, those potential plans could be forced to pause as funds and squad space are reconsidered.

There is also a further financial element. United may receive compensation from FIFA’s club protection programme, which pays up to £120,000-a-week of a player’s salary if he is injured on international duty.

As United wait for detailed medical findings after the injury sustained in Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Spain—which eliminated Marcelo Bielsa’s side at the group stage—the club’s transfer timetable and midfield rebuild will be decided not just by the market, but by Ugarte’s recovery.

  1. I didn’t even know he got hurt like that. If they don’t know what ligament it is, how long are we talking… months? This is gonna mess up their midfield plans for sure.

  2. Wait so United might sell him to fund other guys? That sounds crazy like when players get injured teams just go “cool money later”. Also wasn’t Fernandes already basically done? This whole transfer window feels cursed.

  3. Sounds like he tore everything in his knee, but they keep saying “assessment ongoing” so it could be anything. People always say ligament injuries are 6 weeks but then it’s like 9 months lol. If it’s bad, do they even still go after Mateus Fernandes for 80 mil or do they just panic buy someone cheaper? Also the headline says Guadalajara?? like that’s where Spain played? I’m confused.
