Lancaster’s afternoon quiet ended after a report of a knife, and within hours one Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was stabbed—then survived with noncritical injuries as deputies fired gunfire at the suspect.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies responded to a complaint about a person wielding a knife around 2 p.m. Saturday at Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway in an unincorporated area of Lancaster. During the encounter, the man stabbed one of the deputies, according to the department.

The wounded deputy was taken to the hospital with noncritical injuries. After being struck by gunfire, the man was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Sheriff’s Department did not clarify whether the deputy who was stabbed also shot the suspect. Neither the wounded deputy nor the dead suspect was publicly identified.

In a statement. Sheriff Robert Luna said: “We are grateful that our deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be returning home to their loved ones. ” adding. “Incidents like this are a stark reminder that every day. law enforcement professionals like our Deputies step into unpredictable and rapidly evolving situations in service to protecting our communities.”.

As is customary when deputies shoot a suspect, the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau have launched separate investigations. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office will determine whether criminal charges will be filed and whether the shooting was legally justified.

  1. So the deputy survived but the guy died at a hospital? I don’t even know why they wouldn’t just tase him. Lancaster always ends up crazy like this.

  2. Wait it says “then was fatally shot by deputies” but also “didn’t clarify whether the deputy… also shot the suspect.” That sounds like nobody knows who did it which is weird. Also who stabs someone near Sierra Highway and then just… not? Like common sense people.

  3. I feel like this is gonna get buried under paperwork investigations forever. “Noncritical injuries” doesn’t mean it wasn’t serious. And then they say homicide bureau/Internal Affairs/D.A. like it’s a checklist. Honestly if someone had a knife that close, I’m surprised more deputies didn’t get hurt too.
