Manchester City’s attempt to move for Elliot Anderson hit an immediate wall after Nottingham Forest rejected their opening offer.

The negotiation is still alive, with City continuing talks for the England international despite having an early bid turned down. City’s interest has been clear for months: Daily Mail Sport previously revealed their plan in November. and Anderson is now believed to be ready to move to the Etihad ahead of Manchester United.

For Forest, the price and the timing are the sticking points. Evangelos Marinakis, the club’s owner, has been reluctant to lose his best players in this window and is understood to want a figure in excess of £100million for Anderson.

Anderson is not without leverage. He has three years left on his contract, and he is currently with England at a training camp in Florida preparing for the World Cup. Forest see him as a key player for the tournament and beyond, and he is expected to be central for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The 23-year-old joined Forest from Newcastle United in a deal worth £35m. which also included goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos moving the other way. Since arriving, Anderson has made 92 appearances for the club, including 50 in all competitions this season. City, ideally, wanted any agreement completed before the World Cup kicks off.

City are also entering a period of transition. Enzo Maresca is set to succeed Pep Guardiola as coach, but compensation discussions involving Chelsea remain to be clarified. In parallel. City want further additions after the departures of Bernardo Silva and John Stones. and Anderson is seen as fitting into Maresca’s plans.

The window for City’s business may be narrowing, but the club’s push does not stop at the midfield. Tottenham are also in talks for City winger Savinho, a development Daily Mail Sport revealed last month.
