Mamdani fires Sheriff Anthony Miranda, names Edwin Raymond

Mamdani fires – Mayor Zohran Mamdani removed NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda and appointed retired NYPD Lieutenant Edwin Raymond, a longtime critic of the department who previously sued over policing quotas and served in a New York attorney general role focused on social justice.

On Thursday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani moved quickly—firing NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda and naming retired NYPD Lieutenant Edwin Raymond as his replacement.

Raymond is coming from a career rooted in the NYPD. He spent 15 years with the department, retiring in 2023. His record includes commanding officer roles in Brooklyn North Community Affairs. and platoon commander work in the 81st and 83rd Precincts. He also served for 8 years as a police officer in Transit District 32 and the 77th Precinct. Before retiring, he was promoted to sergeant and then to lieutenant.

Mamdani framed the change as a turn toward a different style of public service. “Edwin Raymond represents the kind of public servant New Yorkers deserve: principled. courageous and deeply committed to justice. ” the mayor said. “Throughout his career, he has fought to build a public safety system rooted in effectiveness, accountability and public trust.”.

The mayor also pointed to Raymond’s most recent government work. “Edwin understands that true safety comes when government earns the confidence of the people it serves, and I am proud to welcome him to our administration as Sheriff of the City of New York,” Mamdani said.

Most recently. Raymond served as the nation’s first social justice liaison in the Office of the New York State Attorney General. Before that, his public profile was already shaped by his outspoken stance on policing. Raymond wrote a book called “An Inconvenient Cop: My Fight to Change Policing in America. ” laying out what he experienced inside the NYPD and his effort to push for changes in policing across the country.

The appointment carries a specific history with the department. Multiple reports say Raymond sued the NYPD in 2015, arguing that the department pressured officers to meet quotas in predominantly Black and brown neighborhoods. He is also a recipient of the NAACP’s Courage Under Fire Award.

Between Mamdani’s praise and Raymond’s record—especially his decision to challenge the NYPD in court—this shift in leadership is less about swapping titles and more about signaling what kind of enforcement culture the new sheriff will try to bring with him.
