When the Empty Bowl Supper began to move from kitchen to serving tables, three high school students at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro ended up putting dirt in their mouths.

The school said the mix-up happened during the May 13 event, a “longstanding community service event” that principal Linda Pease described as something the school does with “a great deal” of meaning.

“Last night at the Empty Bowl Supper, an unfortunate accidental incident occurred,” the school said in a Facebook post last week.

Earlier that day, students had baked sheets of soil to sterilize it as part of a science activity. The plan was to later test plant growth using that soil, the school said. The dirt had been placed into a dish covered in foil and set beside the stove area. kept away from the Empty Bowl Supper food items.

But in the effort to quickly deliver food to the serving tables, the school said the dish was “mistakenly identified as part of the meal and brought out for service.”

Pease said the mix-up began to resolve as soon as the students realized what they had taken.

Three students “briefly” took a bite of the soil before “immediately” recognizing what the item was, the school said. The dirt was removed from the event, the school said.

Afterward, school staff contacted the parents of the students involved and spoke to the students directly, Pease said.

“This was a completely accidental situation and absolutely not a prank,” the school said.

  1. Wait so the science soil was like… already baked and sterilized but still that’s nasty. I’m surprised it even made it out to the tables.

  2. Isn’t this the same thing where they “baked” it so it’s safe? Like it’s basically dried potting soil? Idk why everybody acting like it’s dirt from a street. Also why are they serving anything near foil stuff, seems like poor setup.

  3. Empty Bowl Supper sounds wholesome and then boom, students “briefly” tasting soil… I can’t even. Next time don’t put the experiment stuff by the food like that. Schools always say “not a prank” like somebody’s gonna start believing it was, just wild.
