Maher Warns NYC Socialists Signal Dems Could Lose

Maher warns – Bill Maher said the Democratic Socialists who won New York City primaries—backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani—are a sign Democrats are “well on their way” to blowing the 2026 midterms, and perhaps 2028 as well.

Bill Maher didn’t wait long to land the point. Walking the red carpet and speaking to reporters before receiving the Mark Twain Prize from the Kennedy Center on Sunday. the veteran host of HBO’s Real Time looked at New York City’s Democratic primaries and treated the results like an omen for the party’s future.

“The Democrats just elected three very-far left democratic socialists in New York, who are crazy. Like outright, really crazy,” Maher said. “So how are they going to blow it? I don’t know, but they’re well on their way.”

His warning came with timing that sharpened its sting. The quote stands out because less than a month earlier, Maher had said the Democrats “can’t blow it” in the midterms.

Maher was referring to the three socialist-backed candidates who won their Democratic primaries in New York City last week—an outcome tied directly to NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D). who backed the slate. Two of the winners are Darializa Avila Chevalier (D) and Claire Valdez (D). both described as card-carrying DSA members. just like Mamdani. The third is Brad Lander (D). a former DSA member who left the organization after its response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack in Israel.

Lander’s path still ran through Mamdani. He earned the mayor’s support by running more critically of Israel than incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY). Lander has claimed that American support for Israel makes the USA “complicit in genocide.”

Across their shared socialist politics, the candidates also agree with Mamdani that ICE needs to be abolished. That single issue—along with their broader ideological alignment—appears to be at the center of the discomfort Maher voiced Sunday.

The socialist wave was celebrated by Mamdani on election night and in interviews later in the week. But establishment Democrats were unsettled. according to accounts described around the results: one centrist House Democrat told Axios that 2027 would be a “headache” for the party with them around. and another House Democrat reacted with “Holy sh*t.”.

James Carville went further, urging congressional Democrats to shun any socialists who enter Congress.

On the other side of the aisle. President Donald Trump congratulated Mamdani with his own blunt framing—sardonically praising “3 solid Communists” elected in New York City. His tone shifted later in the week. when he said the Communists have started to make “their move” in the USA. adding: “The game is on. ” followed by “Enjoy watching!”.

Maher’s reaction on Sunday night landed just two nights after he bashed Chevalier on HBO, calling her “patient zero” for the “woke mind virus.”

In the arc of it all—New York primaries last week. Mamdani’s public celebration afterward. and then Maher’s sharp warning at the Kennedy Center—the lesson the party faces. for supporters and critics alike. is becoming harder to ignore: the political direction Democrats are picking in local races is now colliding with national stakes. and Maher is betting it will show up in 2026—and maybe 2028.

  1. I mean NYC just votes whoever, how is that some like omen for 2026? Sounds like clickbait to me. Also “crazy” isn’t an argument lol.

  2. Wait so they got rid of ICE already or was it just them saying it? Cuz I swear I heard something different. And the Hamas thing like… wasn’t that way earlier? Feels like they’re mixing everything together and calling it politics.

  3. Bill Maher calling them “crazy” reminds me of how he always hates anything left. But also if they’re anti-Israel and pro-abolish ICE that’s kind of insane to tie to Dems winning. I don’t even know why Brad Lander is involved—didn’t he used to be on the other side? Idk, 2026 is gonna be a mess either way.
