Maheno’s redemption run climbs back into top four

This season has been a redemption story for the green machine after winning just one game in 2025. Their 36-24 win over the Red Devils at home has them sitting in fourth place on the ladder with three games to play. Ben McCarthy knocked over an easy penalty to get Maheno on the scoreboard first. However, the visitors scored the first try of the match to take the lead. The Kurow forward pack laid a platform with some strong carries for their backs to spin
the ball wide. Matthew Metcalfe then danced past one defender and slipped through to score. Maheno re-took the lead when Blake White regathered a charged-down kick and strolled in under the sticks. Kurow were back in front not too long after thanks to a beautiful counter-attack try. Maheno were hot on attack in the 22m when it was ripped away by Kurow. The Red Devils sent it wide to Laine Hockey, who stabbed a kick ahead, and Angus Norrie beat the retreating Maheno defenders to
the ball and scored. Their lead was short-lived, however, as Kurow failed to clear from the ensuing kickoff, giving Maheno prime attacking territory. They took full advantage as Levi Todd crashed over. McCarthy extended their lead to 12 just before halftime with a try of his own. Maheno began the second half strongly and pulled ahead further with another try scored by Marcus Balchin. Not wanting to fall further behind, Kurow needed a spark and got it through Norrie. After the two sides played a
bit of force-back, the Kurow winger decided to take on the defence. He burst through a hole before putting a nice little chip kick in behind the final defender. Norrie regathered the ball and scampered away downfield to score. Any hope of a Kurow comeback was quickly quashed as Jackson Attfield, in his 100th game, crashed over for Maheno to put the game beyond reach. A late consolation try for Luhan Arangies helped ease the pain of the loss for Kurow. It was another impressive
performance from Maheno, who continue to prove they can tip up anyone on their day. Elsewhere, Athletic Marist beat Excelsior 34-25 in the battle of the carpark. Athies erased a six-point halftime deficit to keep their place in the top four. Competition front-runners Valley continued with another win, this time over Old Boys. It was a tight tussle but the men from Weston got the job done 29-27 to remain unbeaten in 2026.
